Malkajgiri railway station redevelopment underway, set for completion in six months

Malkajgiri railway station redevelopment underway, set for completion in six months. As many as 1,275 stations have been shortlisted across India for renovation and redevelopment by the Indian Railway. Among them, Malkajgiri railway station was selected and a budget of Rs 27 crore was allocated for developing work.

According to the South Central Railway (SCR) authorities, the works were under process, including the foundation of a 12-metre wide Foot over Bridge, lifts and centering works on the ground floor for the AC waiting hall and RPF office. The construction of a highlevel water tank is also completed and a shelter on platform number 1 and 2 is in the completion stage. Apart from this, construction of VIP lounge, toilets and bathrooms on platform 1 and 2 side walls is in progress.

The approach road from the old parking shed to LC Gate Road on the east side of Terminal-1 has also been formed and a cement concrete road will be laid, using which passengers can directly reach the station from Anutex Circle. Also, an elevation on both sides with porticos is being planned with arches and a park and water fountains and a ‘I Love Malkajgiri’ selfie point is also on cards.

“As the footfall at Malkajgiri has increased, it will be better if one more platform on the east side adjacent to the booking counter to LC Gate No 255 Gouthamnagar- Malkajgiri-Medchal is provided,” said Praveen Kumar, a local resident. Currently, around 62 trains are passing through the station on a daily basis, with around 600 general ticket holders and 500 reserved ticket holders’ travelling every day. Meanwhile, along with the facelift of the station, the locals requested the SCR authorities to construct a platform and upgrade a few facilities for the benefit of passengers.

Shantanu Naidu, millennial friend of Ratan Tata.

Shantanu Naidu has been a dearest friend to Ratan Tata. He shared a heartwarming note on Tata’s demise. Since 2018, Shantanu served as Ratan Tata’s manager, handling various responsibilities and initiatives under Tata’s guidance.

Ratan Tata, loved by every Indian, sadly passed away on October 9, 2024, at the age of 86. The iconic business tycoon took his last breath, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be remembered. Ratan Tata was celebrated not only for transforming the Tata Group into a global powerhouse but also for winning hearts with his kindness and altruism. However, did you know that this 86-year-old had a 28-year-old close friend? Yes, you read that right! A man, who belonged to a traditionalist generation, developed a bond with a millennial. We’re talking about Shantanu Naidu, the youngest general manager at Tata Trust and Ratan Tata’s trusted assistant.

Shantanu Naidu hails from Pune, Maharashtra. For his higher education, Naidu attended Savitribai Phule Pune University in 2014 and obtained a degree in engineering. The journey from completing his engineering degree to becoming an intern at Tata Elxsi, one of Ratan Tata’s companies, marked the beginning of his career. After graduation, he pursued an MBA from Cornell Johnson Graduate School of Management, where he excelled in various leadership roles.

Ratan Tata’s closest friend from the millennial generation was Shantanu Naidu. The 30-year-old, in an interview, even referred to Ratan Tata as a “Millennial Dumbledore.” Their bond began when Shantanu was working as a design engineer at Tata Elxsi in 2014. One day, Shantanu saw a dog lying lifeless in the middle of the road, which broke his heart. His love for dogs inspired him to do something for stray dogs. That’s when he came up with the idea to design a dog collar with reflectors. However, raising enough funds for the project became a challenge for Shantanu.

At this point, Shantanu’s father encouraged him to write a letter to Ratan Tata. Initially hesitant, Naidu finally wrote the letter and received a response two months later. Soon after, Naidu, along with one of his friends, went to meet Ratan Tata in Mumbai. When the industrialist asked how he could help with the project, the two friends resisted the urge to ask for immediate financial assistance. Nevertheless, Ratan Tata later invested in Shantanu’s venture, which became what Naidu calls a “Ratan Tata-backed startup.”

Over time, their friendship deepened, and they developed a beautiful bond.

From 2018 onwards, Naidu served as Ratan Tata’s manager, handling various responsibilities and initiatives under Tata’s guidance. Shantanu Naidu also owns a business which goes by the name Goodfellows. His business aims to provide assistant to elderly in their later years. His company reportedly has a net worth of Rs 5 crore.

Taking to LinkedIn, Naidu shared a touching picture of him and Ratan Tata and wrote, “The hole that this friendship has now left with me, I will spend the rest of my life trying to fill. Grief is the price to pay for love. Goodbye, my dear lighthouse.”

Ratan Tata’s legacy will continue to inspire us all.

The double decker buses iconic of Hyderabad have been re-launched in the city on Tuesday.

Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MA&UD) K. T. Rama Rao together with Chief Secretary A. Santhi Kumari flagged off three electric double decker buses in the presence of MP G. Ranjith Reddy, MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi and Special Chief Secretary of MA&UD) Arvind Kumar.

Initially to be used around the Formula E race track covering Tank Bund, Necklace Road, Paradise and Nizam College stretch, the buses are planned to be deployed along a heritage circuit to augment tourism in the city, a statement from the MA&U department said.

With a length of 9.8 metres and height of 4.7 metres, the buses come with a seating capacity of 65 passengers plus driver in two levels. They have a mileage of 150 kilometres with a single charge of two to two-and-a-half hours, the note informed.

The conventional double decker buses, initially started by the Nizam, plied in the city up to 2003, after which they were discarded.

Following a request from a citizen on Twitter, Mr. K. T. Rama Rao had instructed the officials to explore the possibility of bringing them back. As the TSRTC, reeling under the pandemic impact, was not in a position to buy new buses, the job was handed over to HMDA.

HMDA accordingly placed an order for six electric double decker buses out of which three buses have been delivered and launched. The remaining are expected soon, the statement said. HMDA is planning to expand the fleet up to 20 buses, each costing ₹2.16 crore with an annual maintenance contract for seven years.

Indian IT cos turn to gig workers to address talent shortage

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of the IT companies in India are employing gig workers this year, a higher share compared to 57% of the organisations in the year 2020, according to a new report which indicates that firms are turning to gig workers to address shortage of tech talent.

Over 25% of the surveyed organizations are open to hiring gig workers for projects with a duration of more than 12 months

The report by industry body Nasscom, in collaboration with job portal Indeed and Aon, also said that while the share of tech organisations in India employing gig workers has increased, their proportion remains less than 5% of the total workforce. This is especially true for companies with more than 2,000 full-time employees.

However, for smaller organisations with less than 2,000 full-time employees, gig worker proportion is more than 5%. Notably, none of the organisations have mentioned a decline in gig hiring. In about 15% of the surveyed organisations, the proportion of gig workers in the past two years has increased by more than 30%, proving the efficacy of the model, it said.

Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales, Indeed India said that over 46% of organisations surveyed planning to increase the proportion of gig workers from current levels. “Businesses that place gig workers at the core of their business strategies will continue to thrive in the coming years.”

The report showed, focus on specialised skills requirement, employee demand elasticity and cost optimisation are enabling organisations to embed gig for technology roles which traditionally were restricted to HR and support functions. “Software development, UI/UX design, and data analytics have emerged as the top three in-demand giggable skills within the technology sector,” it added.

Notably, before the pandemic, gig workers were mostly hired for projects with duration of up to nine months. But the duration of projects being offered to gig workers has increased significantly, post-pandemic. Over 25% of the surveyed organisations are open to hiring gig workers for projects with a duration of more than 12 months, thus indicating the growing demand for talent and their effective use to meet short-term talent needs.

The Nasscom report, however, noted that while gig in the Indian Tech Industry looks promising, ensuring the quality of gig workers, hurdles in security checks and verification, lack of structured policies, and clarity on regulations or guidelines are some of the key concern areas amongst organisations.

In terms of compensation, a proven capability in the areas of expertise, qualifications and relevant years of experience are some of the top factors being considered by organisations while determining compensation for gig workers, said the Nasscom report.

Over 40% of the surveyed organisations decide on a fixed fee at the initiation of a gig contract. As many as 53% of the surveyed organisations have policies to absorb gig workers as full-time employees too, the report said, adding that currently, over 90% of the surveyed organisations remain open to re-hiring gig workers in the same or adjacent areas of work based on past performance evaluation.

The future workforce will indeed be a blended model wherein the gig economy is expected to play an important role not only as a talent management strategy but also accelerate job creation and boost the country’s economic growth,” said Debjani Ghosh, President, Nasscom. “As we navigate the new world order, multiple models will co-exist with trust and transparency at the core of it,” she said.

The skills gap in the information technology sector is getting significantly worse, as the industry grapples with talent shortage and employee retention, according to a Skillsoft’s 2022 IT Skills and Salary Report published in October 2022. Less than two-thirds (63%) of IT leaders have been unable to fill three of more positions, according to the report as highly-skilled candidates in cloud computing, data science and cybersecurity have proved particularly hard to find, the study said.

Kerala Farmer Grows Apple, Almond Trees in ‘Miracle Air Pots’ in Half The Usual Time

You might think that the best way to grow treesis directly on the ground, but Kattappana-native Bijumon Antony disagrees.

Even growing trees on land can lead to tangling of roots and thereby slow blooming. All the nutrients we provide at the beginning go directly to the roots. ‘Air pot gardening’ is a method to avoid this by planting saplings on pots full of holes, which can be placed anywhere,” says the owner of an exotic fruit farm ‘Miracle Farms’ in Idukki, Kerala.

Other than being a farmer, Bijumon also manufactures and sells his own air pots. He says that this method of farming is prevalent in foreign countries like Israel, China and Japan, and gives faster and better yields. “But due to the high price of such pots in India, most farmers don’t take up the technique here. One pot costs an average of Rs 650 on major e-commerce platforms,” he says.

Bijumon was a photographer by profession and used to run a studio near his home. Since he hails from a farming family, the 47-year-old had always engaged in agriculture as a secondary activity. But it’s been only five years since Bijumon completely turned his focus to agriculture.

“I started off as an integrated farmer, breeding goats, cows, black fowls, and fish, as well as growing several crops including cardamom and pepper. I constantly read and researched about new types of farming suitable for the climate of Kerala. Six years ago, I stumbled upon the idea of cultivating exotic fruits, of which certain varieties can withstand the heat and rain of the state,” the farmer says.

Today, Bijumon grows fruits like apple (25 varieties), orange, peach, pear, almond, walnut, and apricot at Miracle Farms. Their saplings, grown completely in air ports, are available for purchase on the farm and can also be couriered across the country.

What are air pots?

“Air pots are wide sheets made from flexible plastic with cone-shaped indents. The indents have small holes at the tip. The sheet comes with a few screw-like fasteners and a flat round-shaped piece made of plastic screen at the bottom,” says the farmer.

How the air pots look like.

The pots can be assembled by wrapping the mat on the bottom piece. The advantage here is that more air passes through the available holes, thus benefiting the plants. Also, when the roots come out exposed to the atmosphere, they dehydrate and new roots are produced. Those will be fibrous roots that require less nutrients. Rest of the benefits of the soil go to the plant directly,” he explains.

Bijumon initiated this method after planning to get into apple farming. He purchased a few pots online and says the results were great. But he couldn’t make decent profits as the pots were quite expensive, which led him to manufacture his own pots.

With the help of a Coimbatore-based company, he now makes them in different sizes. In the beginning, people visiting his farm were left intrigued by the pots and asked him to get them a few. This eventually turned into a business and his pots are named ‘Miracle Pots’.

The price range of the pots is Rs 50 – Rs 1,000, and to grow an average tree, a pot of Rs 350 is more than enough. If purchasing wholesale, the price comes down. People usually come here and purchase directly. I also courier them to all parts of the world,” say the agripreneur.

Other than growing trees, the pots can also be used for composting. As the bacteria grows faster due greater presence of oxygen through the holes, composting takes fewer days if done in air pots, he assures.

Bijumon says that air pot gardening helps plants stay fresh and provides them with all their nutritional needs. It gives results within half of the prescribed time and requires less labour. Another notable advantage is that the trees grown this way can be commuted to any other spot easily, without damage. null

“All you have to do is purchase pots of required size, fill it with soil, and plant the saplings. Occasional watering and fertilising is enough. Everything else is similar to normal gardening,” he says.

He is all set to expand his production and make the pots available in local farm shops. Bijumon, who has studied till Class 8, is accompanied by his sons, who provided technological support by starting a website and YouTube channel to popularise this method of farming.

Hyderabad: Woman suffers ‘beauty parlour stroke’ after hair wash at salon

HYDERABAD: A recent trip to the salon almost turned fatal for a 50-year-old woman from Hyderabad, who suffered a stroke while getting her hair washed before a haircut. Doctors treating her said that a key vessel supplying blood to the brain was pressed when she bent back her neck for the wash, causing the stroke.

Incidentally, such health scares – often termed as the “beauty parlour stroke

syndrome” after it was first reported in the US in 1993 – have been reported in the past too, said city doctors, adding that similar cases are common among men walking into salons for a neck massage.

“It happens when the masseur presses down on the neck and head hard, at times even twists the neck to produce a cracking sound. This leads to tender vessels getting injured, leading to a stroke,” said Dr Praveen Kumar Yada, consultant neurologist at KIMS, Secunderabad, who has handled multiple such cases over the years.

The usual symptoms are dizziness, nausea, and vomiting, among other things. The 50-year-old woman experienced these signs, along with imbalances in her body, and initially consulted a gastroenterologist. She was referred to a neurologist after the doctor found no gastric issues.

Salon stroke triggered by choked artery

By the time the patient came to us, about 24 hours had passed since the original symptoms. But she had a slanted gait and was weak which made us suspect it was a stroke and we asked for an MRI. As expected, clots were seen in her right cerebellum and in a key artery in the back of the neck called PICA,” said Dr Sudhir Kumar, senior consultant neurologist, Apollo Hospitals, Jubilee Hills.

Dr Sudhir said they concluded it was “beauty parlour stroke syndrome” as it occurred due to “hyperextension of neck towards the basin while washing hair”. Like any other stroke patient, the 50-year-old has been put on medication for life.

While these strokes often happen due to a pre-existing risk or anomaly – in the latest case the woman had a thinner than usual vertebral artery, leading to slower blood supply to the brain – it can be caused by severe injury to the vessels too, said Dr Subodh Raju, director, neuro and spine surgery, AIG Hospitals. He said: “At times we also see kids suffer strokes and that’s because of a thinner vertebral artery.”

In his past 20 years of practice, Dr Sudhir said he handled two other such cases involving women – in their 30s and 40s – with no known risk factors. “Immediately after their salon visit, however, they presented with milder strokes called ‘transient ischemic attack’. Since they were younger, they required only three-five years of blood thinners.”

The Ambitious Business Plan Of Narayana Murthy’s Son, Rohan Murty

Rohan Murty owns 1.45% of Infosys, whose market value is about $80 billion, making him the second-largest individual shareholder of the outsourcing giant founded by his father Narayana Murthy.

Rohan Murty’s Soroco works with global corporations to streamline office tasks.

Rohan Murty saw his father build Infosys Ltd. into one of India’s national champions by pioneering a novel strategy of outsourcing technology services. Now the 39-year-old is attempting a no less daunting task of using data to make white-collar workers more efficient.

The billionaire Harvard alum’s Soroco works with global corporations to streamline office tasks, using techniques similar to Toyota Motor Corp.’s pioneering efforts decades ago to eliminate waste in manufacturing.

The company collects data to study patterns of how workers use software across teams and suggests fixes to iron out kinks, boost productivity and reduce costs. The solutions can be better technology, automation, standardization and preventing repetition of tasks.

Rohan Murty’s Soroco works with global corporations to streamline office tasks.

The startup, based both in Boston and Bangalore, gets a real-time view of how people in teams get work done by using machine learning. Customers include drugmaker Bayer AG, engineering giant Robert Bosch GmbH, candy and petfood maker Mars Inc. as well as some Wall Street banks and global online retailers.

“The manufacturing industry built and refined processes to make blue-collar work more efficient but the digital age has no parallel,” founder and Chief Technology Officer Murty said in an interview recently in Bangalore. “Soroco has built the white-collar equivalent.”

He’s hardly the first one to come up with the concept, which is dubbed task mining in industry parlance. Giants such as Microsoft Corp., International Business Machines Corp. and SAP SE all have similar offerings and have struggled to make much of a dent in the daily inefficiencies of white-collar work.

Mr Murty thinks he’s found a more effective approach. Soroco’s software can collect data and map patterns across entire teams, uncovering inefficiencies and waste that top executives can’t see, he said.

It’s common to see the management pitted against the team doing the work,” said Mr Murty, who earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a doctorate from Harvard University, both in computer science,. “Soroco helps align both toward a common goal.”

In one example, a global pharmaceutical firm faced complaints from customers about delays in handling orders, rebates and returns. Soroco says its machine-learning software detected steps along the way that required a significant amount of manual work and recommended automation across multiple locations. That cut the processing time by 75%, resulting in a steep reduction in complaints, according to the startup.

New Delhi: It’s no longer enough to churn out graduates who know their engineering equations, software programmes, or management theories, but to produce ‘well-rounded professionals’ with a deep understanding of society, economics, polity, history, and more — so seems to be the growing consensus among top technical and professional institutes across India.

Over the last few years, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) have picked up humanities and the liberal arts in a big way, whether by offering new degree programmes, expanding the range of elective courses on offer, or starting transdisciplinary initiatives.

For instance, this month IIT-Jodhpur inaugurated its Centre of Excellence on Arts and Digital Immersion, which will reportedly “explore the intersection of art and digital technology”. Earlier this year, IIT-Guwahati launched a Master’s programme in liberal arts. IIT-Madras will offer a Master’s degree in economics, English, and development studies from 2023. IIM-Bangalore, too, plans to offer a four-year undergraduate program in liberal arts from next year.

Demand from students for a multi-disciplinary education and from the industry to have more “well-informed” professionals has fuelled the trend, experts who spoke to ThePrint said.

What has also provided an impetus is the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which calls for technical training to be interwoven with “opportunities to engage deeply with other disciplines”, with the aim of eventually “enhancing the employability of the youth”.

While IITs have been offering courses in humanities like economics, philosophy and English since their inception, and are now ramping up their offerings, the IIITs and IIMs are fairly new on the block. Across the board, these institutes are focusing on hiring professors with degrees from high-ranking international and Indian universities.

“The IITs always had humanities — they have had some of the best philosophy and sociology departments. But now IIITs and some other institutes are also including social sciences and humanities in their curriculum in a major way,” said Nishad Patnaik, who did his PhD from the New School for Social Research in New York and currently teaches philosophy at the Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) in Delhi.

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan shot in foot in reported assassination attempt in Pakistan

Updated 11:19 AM EDT, Thu November 03, 2022article video

Islamabad, Pakistan(CNN)Pakistan’s ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan was shot in the foot at a rally Thursday, according to an official from his party, which said the incident was an assassination attempt.

A bullet hit Khan in his foot after a gunman opened fire, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leader Asad Umar said.

The former Pakistan cricket captain was taken from the rally site just outside the town of Gujranwala to receive treatment in Lahore, around a two-and-a-half-hour drive away.https://66e7fa8fdb4e6422b06e9eb95fea010c.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html?n=0

Khan is in a stable condition and undergoing surgery, according to Senator Fawad Chaudhry, a senior PTI politician and Khan’s former information minister.

Six others were injured and are still being treated, Chaudhry said.

Police said they detained a man suspected of firing shots at the rally. The male suspect was arrested with a 9mm pistol and two empty magazines, police said.

At least one person was killed in the incident, according to Faisal Javed, a senior PTI politician and close Khan ally who received a wound to the head in the attack. The victim’s name has not been released.

In a video statement Javed, who can be seen sitting up while receiving treatment, said: “Please pray for us, for Imran Khan, pray for our fellow workers who are severely injured and pray for our party member who has died and is martyred.”

Protests broke out across Pakistan in support of Khan, including in the capital Islamabad as well as in Peshawar. Khan was on the seventh day of a nationwide rally tour calling for elections to be brought forward from August next year.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who came to power after Khan lost a parliamentary vote of no confidence in April, condemned Thursday’s attack on his political rival on Twitter.

“I condemn the incident of firing on PTI Chairman Imran Khan in the strongest words,” Sharif wrote, adding that he has asked for an “immediate report on the incident” and will pray for the recovery of those injured.

“Violence should have no place in our country’s politics,” Sharif wrote.

On October 21, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) recommended that Khan be disqualified from holding political office for five years, a move likely to further inflame political tensions in the country.

While reading out the recommendation, ECP chief Sikandar Sultan Raja stated that Khan was disqualified for being involved in “corrupt practices.”

The commission said its decision was based on the grounds that Khan had “made false statements” regarding the declaration of the sale of gifts sent to him by the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Dubai while in office — an offense that is illegal under the country’s constitution.null

Khan was unseated in a vote of no-confidence following claims of bad governance and economic mismanagement.

Since then he has repeatedly claimed, without providing any evidence, that the United States had orchestrated his ouster. Khan’s allegations have become a staple at rallies he has held across Pakistan in a bid to return to power.

His claims have struck a chord with a young population in a country where anti-American sentiment runs high, and anti-establishment feelings are being fueled by a rising cost of living crisis.

This is not the first time that Pakistani politicians have been attacked.

Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on December 27, 2007, and then Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani survived an assassination attempt in 2008.

According to the police, T.Suryanarayan (30), a native of Srikakulalm district in AP, was staying in an apartment in Krishnanagar, and worked as a junior artist. During the course of their stay, Surya introduced one of his friends Srinivas Reddy, a native of Rajahmundry in AP, to Naga Vardhini and he started frequenting their house.

Around four months ago some differences cropped up between Surya and Naga Vardhini following which both of them parted their ways. Surya started staying separately in another flat in the same building,” said Banjara Hills Inspector, M Narendar.

After few weeks of their separation, Naga Vardhini allegedly started staying with Srinivas. On coming to know about it, Surya got angry and warned Naga Vardhini to mend her ways.

On Sunday night on coming to know about the presence of Srinivas in the flat of Naga Vardhini, an agitated Surya went to them and picked up a quarrel over the relationship.

“In a fit of rage, the couple attacked Surya and pushed him from the second floor of the apartment. The man fell down and sustained serious injuries. He was shifted to a hospital for treatment,” said the police Inspector.

The police booked a case against Naga Vardhini and Srinivas. Both of them were arrested and remanded on Wednesday by the police.

These often labyrinthine markets have been a vital part of Indian culture, trade and social life for centuries, through the Mughal and British eras. Whether you are a shopaholic or not, you still need to experience the vibe of these markets. The Indian marketplace is often chaotic and bustling, there is always something going on. The sights, sounds and smells are all stimulating and unique to the beautiful chaos that is India. They are also an excellent place to buy everything from clothes to jewellery, fruits and vegetables, street food and much more – all in one place. Just remember, bargaining is part and parcel of this experience!

Previously known as the Sir Stuart Hogg Market, this historic shopping destination on  Lindsay Street was founded in 1874. Today the market is one of the most popular trading hubs in the city and has over 2,000 stores that sell all sorts of items from clothing to electronics, food, flowers, utensils, leather bags, and much more. It has survived various floods and fires and is still continues to be in use.

Many of the shopkeepers also descend from a long line of Jewish families who have lived here for generations and are often very knowledgeable about the area’s history.

10. Meena Bazaar, Delhi – India’s First Covered Market

Though Meena Bazaar is considered a part of Chandni Chowk, in Delhi, it deserves a special mention. It was built by the Mughal emperors over 300 years ago, and was the first covered bazaar in India. Located between Jama Masjid Kalan and Dalan, near the Red Fort, it is also a popular place to go wedding shopping; as it sells everything – from sarees to jewellery – that you would need for the big day.

11. Flea Markets, Goa – Colourful With A Hippie Vibe

Goa’s beaches are famous (among other things) for their flea markets. They date back to the 1980s when they started as “hippie exchanges” where the foreign tourists sold their possessions. Now they are full of stalls where both locals and foreigners sell clothes, accessories, handicrafts, souvenirs, and more; all at dirt-cheap prices. The Anjuna Flea Market held on Wednesdays, and the Arpora Saturday Night Bazaar are some of the most popular markets. Also, visit the more authentic Mapusa Friday Bazaar where women from nearby villages gather to sell homemade products.

Homemaker Upcycles Junk Bikes, Bulbs, Basins to Create Fairytale Garden in UP

Till 2013, Ghaziabad resident Ruchi Goel had never tried her hands at growing even a single plant, even though her mother nurtured a charming garden in their home when she was growing up. null

“Even my mother-in-law had a beautiful garden, but after her death in 2013, the plants started dying, despite the fact that I was watering them everyday,” she tells The Better India.

Ruchi realised that the plants needed individual care, so she decided to take up gardening in her mother-in-law’s memory.

“I began watching videos and taking tips from my mom to sustain the garden. But it worked beyond my expectation and made me fall in love with the activity. I started buying more plants and thought of different ways to grow them in the front yard. In fact, I am addicted to this hobby now,” shares the homemaker.

Ruchi now grows more than 1,000 ornamental and flowering plants in her lush garden. She also cultivates vegetables like radish, brinjal, tomato, coriander and carrot on the terrace.

A creative garden full of colours.

Everyone who swings by the place is mesmerised, she says, not only because of the wide collection of plants, but also for the gardener’s creativity. Ruchi has incorporated her art skills by using several items from her household, which would otherwise be junk, to beautify her garden.

“I opened our store room — which had been left locked for years — during the lockdown period. I found multiple things that would be of no use otherwise and decided to upcycle them,” says the 33-year-old.

These items include her husband’s old scooter, her children’s abandoned bicycles, toys, bulbs, a wash basin, and wood particles left from construction.

She paints all the items herself.

“Now people come here to enquire where I purchase these decorative items from. Some find it hard to believe that I made them from scrap, including my family,” she gushes.

Today, Ruchi’s garden is not an ordinary one, but a thematic setup. To remember the names of plants, she has placed stones painted with the name of each herb and flower. “My kids also love gardening now, just like art. They help me do both with so much energy,” she adds.

From a girl who never watered her mother’s garden to a ‘plant mommy’ with more than 1,000 plants, the change is so huge that even I am surprised. It’s all because gardening has the power to leave you happy, satisfied and calm. Nothing comes close to the feeling of saving a dying plant or seeing a fresh bud in a newly purchased plant,” she says.

Go On Waterfall Trails And Forest Walks In Tamelong And Senapati

This winter, look at going slow in Manipur. Hit up Tamelong and Senapati districts which have beautiful emerald-green hills and meandering rivers flowing lazily, sometimes breaking into waterfalls and sometimes into gentle streams.

For your winter holidays, get away from the hustle and bustle, and head out to these two places in Manipur for sensitive and sustainable travel. With their mesmerising landscape, they are perfect for mindful exploration. Here’s a guide to what to explore in the region.

The Tamenglong district is home to deep gorges, mysterious caves, waterfalls, orchids, and uncharted woodlands. Due to its extensive orange production, it is also known as Manipur’s orange bowl. Tamenglong, 140 kilometres to the west of Imphal, serves as the district headquarters. The Hoabinhian civilisation, which is also present in other South Asian nations, is said to have originated in the Tharon cavehere. There are five outlets in the 655.6m-long cave. The layout of the entire cave is depicted on a stone at the entrance for the convenience of visitors.

You can also hit up the Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary which is situated in Makoi and is home to a variety of animals, including tigers, leopards, little Indian civets, langurs, hoolock gibbons, and great Indian hornbills. Residents of this picturesque lake include turtles and pythons. Between March and April, migratory birds can also be seen in this area. On the western side of Tamei town is the lovely Buning Meadow. The meadow sometimes resembles an orchid bed during specific periods of the year. The district also hosts the Barak river which breaks into seven waterfalls, within close proximity of each other. Owing to its rapid tides, the Barak river is perfect for white-water rafting and other watersports. One of the seven, Khoudong waterfall is relatively unexplored.

Senapati

Most of the region is covered with dense forests with a diverse range of flora and fauna, including very rare species. Sacred to the tribes of Manipur and Nagaland, Makhel Caves are worth a visit. According to legend, this site marks the spot from where the Nagas dispersed to other regions in the Northeast. An old pear tree here stands as a memorial to the event. Other attractions include sacred banyan trees, believed to have grown from the tomb of the Naga mother; the Dispersal Tree at Sajouba (2km north of Makhel); the Farewell Monolith, the Triomonolith (3km south of Makhel), the Hailstorm of Stone, and the Lucky Stone.

Nothing quite prepares you for your first glimpse of the Sadu Chiru Waterfall. Flanked by steep, vegetation-covered cliffs, this delicate-looking cascade is worth the hike up to see it. It is 81km south of Senapati city. Visitors can reach this spot by hiring a car from Imphal, which is 25km away. Cars can go no further than Nambol from where autorick-shaws are available for hire. Even these can go only to a certain point after which one must approach on foot. The walk up to the falls involves climbing steep steps, so wear comfor-table shoes. Do not miss the charming little hamlets and scenic vistas on this leg of the journey.

Situated on a cliff in the westernmost tip of the Senapati District, the village of Yang Khullen is home to the Zemei tribe. The village (khullen) is 76km north of Senapati city. To the east of Yang Khullen lie Maram Khullen and Liyai Khullen. The former is one of the largest villages in the district. Liyai Khullen has stone monoliths, water pools and Banyan trees. The Barak river originates here.

A beautiful hill station lying on the Manipur-Nagaland border, Mao is just 44km northeast of Senapati. It is home to the Mao people, one of the major tribes constituting the Nagas. The small township is set along NH39 and is referred to as Mao Gate, owing to its location on the state border. The people of this village have a fascinating tradition of setting up monoliths or flat boulders, which serve as monuments to commem-morate an event or ritual.

Mukesh Ambani takes Dubai! The second richest man in Asia smashed UAE property records with another landmark deal on a Palm Jumeirah villa worth US$163 million after splurging on a mansion for Anant

  • Ambani bought the extravagant villa from previous owner Kuwaiti tycoon Mohammed Alshaya who runs the conglomerate behind Starbucks, H&M and Victoria’s Secret
  • The news comes after Mukesh’s previous record in the Dubai property market in September, when he spent US$80 million on a 10-bedroom mansion for his son Anant

In the space of just two months, Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, 65, has dropped US$243 million on two luxury homes in Dubai, breaking property records in the region.

In September, Mukesh dropped US$80 million on a 10-bedroom mansion for his son Anant. This time, he’s dished out US$163 million on a mansion from a well-known Kuwaiti businessman, as reported by Bloomberg in mid October.

91 Killed As Gujarat Bridge Collapses Week After Renovation

There were about 500 people on the bridge when it collapsed, with 100 still feared trapped under water

A British-era bridge in Gujarat’s Morbi has collapsed just a week after renovation, killing at least 91 people. Search is on for over 100 others, who have fallen into the river. The government accepts responsibility for the tragedy, a minister said.

Here are the Top 10 points in this big story:

  1. The suspension bridge collapsed at 6.42 this evening when around 500 people had congregated on it to perform some rituals in connection with the Chhath puja. Daytime videos from the spot over the weekend showed the bridge rocking dangerously as people walked across.
  2. According to reports, around 100 people are still feared trapped in the waters of the Macchu river. Videos from the spot showed many struggling in the water, trying to reach the bank in darkness.
  3. Many of the dead are women and children, locals say. Seventy people have been rescued and admitted in hospital. The rescue work is being hampered by the absence of light, officials said.
  4. The cable bridge in Morbi — nearly 150 years old and a popular tourist spot — was closed for seven months for renovation work. It was reopened to the public on October 26, the Gujarati New Year.
  5. “Renovation happened last week. We are also shocked. We are looking into the matter… The government takes responsibility for this tragedy,” Brijesh Merja, Gujarat’s minister for Labour and Employment, told NDTV in an exclusive interview.
  6. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was in Gujarat today, tweeted, “I am deeply saddened by the tragedy at Morbi. Talked to Gujarat Chief Minister Shri @Bhupendrapbjp  and other officials about this. Relief and rescue operations are going on in full swing and all necessary assistance is being provided to the affected”.
  7. “I express my condolences to the families of the citizens who lost their lives in the tragedy of Morbi. The state government will provide Rs 4 lakh to the family of each deceased and Rs 50,000 to the injured,” tweeted Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
  8. A compensation of Rs 2 lakh has been announced from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the families of the victims.
  9. With the bridge collapse coming ahead of the assembly elections in the state, the Congress and Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party have blamed the BJP for the tragedy. The Congress has demanded an investigation, claiming that the bridge did not get a clearance for reopening from the city’s civic body.
  10. “The bridge was given to Oreva company for operation and maintenance for 15 years. In March, it was closed for renovation,” the Chief Officer of Morbi Municipality, Sandeepsinh Zala, was quoted as saying by news agency Press Trust of India. “It was opened to the public after the completion of the renovation work. But the local municipality had not yet issued any fitness certificate (after the renovation work),” he said.

Treehouses to Mud Bungalows: 2 Friends Make Forest Hideaways For Perfect Nature Trips

On the outskirts of the dense forest of Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh, rich with royal Bengal tigers, white tigers, leopards and deer, one can spot five houses on and among the trees. Here one can see wild animals and birds in the reserved forest.

These tree and mud houses are the brainchild of two friends from Uttarakhand.

Manav Khanduja and Shyamendra Singhare, who studied in the field of environment and hospitality, respectively, always dreamt of starting a business that was steeped in nature without causing it any harm. “It all started with our love for jungles and wildlife,” says Manav, co-founder and director of Pugdundee Safaris based in Haryana.

‘Pugdundee’ is a Hindi word meaning – ‘a foot trail commonly used by humans and animals’.

Mud house by Pugdundee.

This word is commonly used for beaten paths in the Indian jungles. Pugdundee Safaris, which had a humble beginning in 1986, is now a responsible safari company with seven properties across central India.

The beginning of Pugdundee was rather unplanned, says the duo. It started as a small tented camp at Panna as Ken River Lodge. “This was started as a part-time business. But once we realised the interest from travellers towards nature and wildlife tourism, we understood the scope and decided to expand,” says Manav, adding, “The growth was slow as we used the income from one property to build the next. After the first venture in 1986, we set up two more lodges between 2007-2010.”

Today, Pugdundee Safaris have expanded to include the following properties in Madhya Pradesh: Kanha Earth Lodge in Kanha National Park, Denwa Backwater Escape in Satpura National Park, Pench Tree Lodge in Pench National Park, Treehouse Hideaway and Kings Lodge in Bandhavgarh National Park and Ken River Lodge in Panna National Park.

Pugdundee Safaris has seven properties across Central India.

They also have Waghoba Eco Lodge in Tadoba National Park, Maharashtra.

Shyamendra adds, “Central India is blessed with the country’s finest wildlife. It’s on the wish list of every wildlife enthusiast. The parks here are so diverse that one can feel completely overwhelmed by the mere expanse of the wilderness. The state also inhabits India’s most popular national parks, known for tiger sightings including Kanha and Bandhavgarh.”

Pugdundee Safaris’ intimate jungle lodges, located inside popular national parks, let travellers closely experience the wilderness of the country. Manav, who graduated from the Centre for Environment Law at WWF, adds, “Since all the properties are situated in the suburbs of national parks, permission from the officials was a must. As the projects are completely sustainable, there were not many challenges in acquiring them.”

In Pugdundee we assure incomparable wildlife safaris,” he says, adding, “Between 2009 and 2022, we have been awarded for our excellence in safaris, our commitment to sustainability and our experienced naturalists.”

Pugdundee Safaris’ intimate jungle lodges, located inside popular national parks, let travellers closely experience the wilderness of the country.

What started with just two friends is now run by a passionate team of 300 professionals, 80 per cent of whom are locals, committed to providing an incredible wildlife experience. Manav says, “The team includes naturalists, nature guides, boatmen, trackers and a marketing team based in Delhi.”

Escape to the wild

Right from the beginning, the founders’ idea was not just to start a hospitality business. While some of the lodges provide a raw, into-the-nature experience, a few have luxury set-ups with a private pool, multi-cuisine food and a comfortable stay.

But most of our guests are inclined towards simple setups,” he says. For example, a popular choice, Kanha Earth Lodge is tucked away in a small tribal hamlet. It is built in less than 10 per cent of the 16 acres of natural forest that houses it. “The lodge and its furniture are constructed and designed using local material, waste and recycled wood, a true reflection of impeccable standards in green architecture. Mud is the main raw material of this ‘earth’ house. And all the walls are made of mud and wood.”

Sustainably building treehouses and lodges and employing local people were the other aims of the venture. Most of the staff at Pugdundee are from nearby villages and have an innate love for the jungles and professional dedication beyond the call of duty. “Over 45 of them who came in as beginners in the field of hospitality are now working in managerial roles,” he adds.

Manav says, “We believe that local people hold the future of the forests in their hands and can either help protect or destroy them. If we wish to conserve our forests, we must look after the needs of local people by helping to improve their ability to earn livelihoods, which in turn will enhance their standards of living. Addressing their needs is the key to ensuring the future of our natural habitats. We continuously strive to deliver the best possible guest experience, while still integrating the conservation of jungles and the people living around them.”https://210c045e97eb801d8f6667535844991b.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html?n=0

The duo agree that ‘responsible tourism and wildlife conservation go hand-in-hand’. So the lodges have a strict’ zero single-use plastic’ policy. The spaces are presented in vernacular architecture styles, tastefully built with an emphasis on local and green architecture.

“For over five years, we continue to be actively engaged in contributing to the education and infrastructure of the local schools,” Manav says. “Adopting farm-to-table initiatives by serving fresh food grown in our organic kitchen gardens and sourced from local farmers is another measure. Above 70 per cent of lodge services and procurement needs are met locally.”

organic vegetables collected from local farmers is used to make meals in pugdundee lodges

From farm to plate.

The lodges are ‘rewilded’ with native species extending into natural forests, offering safe passage to visiting wildlife and a natural habitat to many other species. The food needed for the lodges is procured from within 100 miles of each location. “This not only helps our brand become carbon positive but also benefits the local farmers and economy,” says Manav, adding, “We have carefully curated our organic gardens to give our guests the taste of local flavour served with the uncompromised benefit of nutrition across our lodges.”

Additionally, they have adopted ESG (environmental, social, and governance), the international sustainability criteria for hotels, provided by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council in 2020 which is reviewed every year.

Call of the wild

“Being a wildlife resort, sitting in the hub of wildlife, the key experience that our guests expect when they visit us is a jungle safari. But we also host several other activities that can give them a real taste of local life and promote non-vehicular greener options of basking in the blissful serenity. This includes village visits, local food tasting, nature walks, cycling, sundowner treks and much more,” gushes Shyamendra.

The lodges are fully operational between October to June as this is the time when the core area of the parks is open for visitors. The founders suggest that summers are usually considered to be a good time for sighting as the vegetation across these forests dries down, offering a clearer view. Winters, on the other hand, have their perks and the beauty of the forests is unmatched. null

Manav says, “All our lodges are boutique accommodations and allow only a limited number of intake at any point in time.”

The team can be reached out through emails or direct calls. “We are active across social media, so customers reaching out to us through any of the platforms that we are present on, is also an easy option to make the bookings,” notes Manav.

The team has received several awards and recognitions including a silver medal in International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) Awards 2022 for reducing plastic waste in the environment category, another silver medal in the sustainable leadership hotels category of Outlook Indian Responsible Tourism Awards 2022, and India’s leading wildlife resort award by South Asian Travel Awards 2017.null

Filmmaker Sajid Khan made me touch his genitals: Sherlyn Chopra’s explosive claims

Sherlyn Chopra was allegedly sexually exploited by filmmaker Sajid Khan in 2005 (File)

Actor Sherlyn Chopra is the latest to accuse filmmaker Sajid Khan of sexual harassment and criminal intimidation. She has filed a police complaint against Khan in Mumbai.

“I didn’t have the courage earlier to file a complaint against a big name like him. After #MeToo, women stepped forward. He should be jailed,” Chopra told news agency .

I have recently filed a complaint against #MeToo-accused Sajid Khan for sexual exploitation, criminal force and criminal intimidation. The first thing that the police asked me was when this incident happened, to which I replied that it happened in 2005. They asked me why it took me so long to reach out to them. I said that back then I did not have the courage to file a sexual exploitation complaint against a big name like Sajid Khan,” she said.

“I got the courage after the 2018 MeToo movement when I saw and heard women share their horror stories,” she said.

“Anyone can read those media interviews or go on social media to know how #MeToo-accused Sajid Khan behaved inappropriately with those women. He asked some of them about sex, like how many times a day you have sex, how many boyfriends they have, and he showed me his genitals and made me touch them. The question that arises is, can a woman not share her pain even years after the incident? Obviously she can. Back then, I did not have the courage, but today I do. Today, I feel that be it Sajid Khan or Raj Kundra, if they have done wrong, I can raise my voice against them,” she told news agency

She also spoke about the evidence against Khan and said that even back then she “did not have any evidence against him because she didn’t carry a spy camera during a professional meeting with a director or producer”.

“So, if the police would have asked me about evidence, what could I have said? It would have been his words against mine. It all comes down to credibility and status. He is obviously much bigger than me. He is Farah Khan’s brother, who is close to Shah Rukh Khan and Salman Khan. So what am I in front of him? I was just an outsider and a nobody. Then what way do I have to prove the truth?”

“I did tell my friends and close ones about it, but not my family, because I thought about what they would think about me. I had lost my father at the time. Hence, my family was already very disturbed and by telling them this I did not want to add to it. So, yes, whatever information I have and whatever witnesses there are, I am ready to present them. But if you ask me if I have it all on camera, then no, because we don’t carry a spy camera for professional meetings though these were causal meetings for him, a way to get what he wanted,” continued the actor.null

“But it is different that for Khan these were not professional meetings,” she added.

“Like how Harvey Weinstein has been sentenced to 23 years in jail, I want Sajid Khan to be jailed as well. The duration of his sentence would be decided by the judges keeping in mind the statements of all the women who have come out. I want the people of this country to understand that no accused, be they rich or poor, Sajid Khan or Raj Kundra, no one is above the law,” she said.

Meanwhile, Sajid Khan is currently a participant in the Salman Khan-hosted reality TV show ‘Bigg Boss 16’. Several people have demanded he be thrown out over charges of sexual misconduct. Singer Sona Mohapatra and actor Ali Fazal are among those who have objected to Sajid’s participation and demanded his removal.

Giant sunfish discovered in Atlantic is the heaviest bony fish at around 3 tons

A monster sunfish, tipping the scales at nearly 3 tonnes was found floating dead off the shore of Portugal in the Atlantic. It has been discovered to be the world’s heaviest bony fish ever seen. Although the oceanic behemoth was discovered on the 9th of December last year, near Faial Island, in the Azores details of the discovery were recently published in the Journal of Fish Biology which brought it into the limelight.

The local authorities took the mortal remains of the aquatic animal back to the port in order to conduct a proper study on it. Researchers from Atlantic Naturalist Association and the Azores University studied the carcass and collected more data on it. When discovered, the humongous fish was weighed, measured, and the tissue sample was taken for DNA testing.Ads by

Reportedly, the carcass of the fish weighed about 6,050 pounds. This makes it several pounds heavier than the previous world record holder for heaviest bony fish which was a female sunfish caught off Kamogawa in Japan in the year 1996. This also puts it in the same weight class as a Hummer or a rhinoceros!

The Azores sunfish was weighed with a crane scale dynamometer after being raised above ground using a forklift truck. The dynamometer is a device designed to weigh loads typically hoisted by a crane. The fish was 10.67 feet long and had a height of 11.78 feet.

Although the reason for the death of the marine behemoth is unclear, it is speculated that it could have been inflicted by the keel of a boat. The conclusion was made after a close observation of the wound suffered by the fish which marked the cylindrical dent on its head with red paint.

José Nuno Gomes-Pereira, the lead author of the paper and postdoctoral researcher from the Atlantic Naturalist Association, told CNN Tuesday that it was saddening “to see the animal in this situation as it must have been a king of open ocean.”

The “tremendously big” sunfish has been buried in the Natural Park of Faial Island, he added.

There are two types of fish, cartilaginous and bony. Bony fish account for the majority of fish, according to Gomes-Pereira — think carp, salmon, and bass. Cartilaginous fish have skeletons made of cartilage and encompass species like sharks and stingrays.

Giant sunfish were first recognized as their own species in 2018 and are known to weigh twice as much as the second heaviest fish species, the ocean sunfish, according to a news release from the Atlantic Naturalist Association last Thursday.

Parag Agrawal vs Elon Musk: Twitter CEO has lost his job, yet he is winner of this fight and not Musk

At first glance it may look like Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal has lost the fight with Elon Musk, who fired him immediately after buying Twitter. But look closer: Agrawal is actually the winner as he forced Musk to complete a $44 billion deal which Musk wanted to avoid.

Highlights

  • Twitter is now an Elon Musk company as he closes a $44 billion deal.
  • Immediately after taking control, Elon Musk fired Twitter CEO Parag Agarawal.
  • Agrawal, however, is a winner in the tussle as he forced Musk to complete the deal.

After months of drama, some testy statements, a bit of trolling from Musk and the reveal of some juicy text messages, Elon Musk is finally closing his deal to purchase Twitter for some $44 billion. Now as he completed the deal, according to reports, Musk has already gone after the senior leadership of Twitter. It is well-known after the months-long saga that there is no love lost between Elon Musk and Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal. Musk also doesn’t like other top leaders at Twitter, including the company’s policy chief Vijaya Gadde and its CFO Ned Segal. So, all three have been fired, probably along with a few more.

At first glance it looks like a “win” for Elon Musk, who has sparred — almost in public with Gadde and privately with Agrawal — with Twitter leadership since he launched his bid to get a stake in the company. But look closer and it is clear that it is not Musk but Agrawal who is the winner in this tussle. Sure, he is losing his job as the CEO of Twitter. But significantly, even as he loses something, he is gaining a lot because he has forced Elon Musk to go through a deal that is extremely lucrative for Twitter shareholders. Keep in mind that Agrawal has forced him to purchase Twitter even when Musk tried to walk away from the deal.

Personally too, Agrawal is getting something out of his firing. When he became the CEO of Twitter last year in December, he did so with a clause in his contract that guaranteed him a severance fee of $42 million if Twitter asked him to go before one year was over. This is the money that Twitter, now an Elon Musk company, will pay to Agrawal.

Musk forced to the deal table

To understand why this is a win for Agrawal, one needs to look at what has happened in the Musk-Twitter saga since April.

Once Elon Musk decided that he would not join the Twitter Board and instead acquire the company, it became clear that things were not cool with him and Agrawal. A few days later, when Musk launched his bid to purchase Twitter for $44 billion, a price that most felt was extremely generous and too good to pass, most people assumed that if Musk succeeded in getting Twitter then he would ask top executives to go. In other words, it was very clear that Agrawal would not have a place in the Twitter owned by Elon Musk. And it would have been very clear to Agrawal too.

Yet, Agrawal as CEO of Twitter probably recognised that the price Musk was offering was too good and he threw his weight behind completing the deal.

But once Twitter accepted Musk’s offer, things started to unravel fast. With many experts weighing that Musk was overpaying for Twitter, as well as highlighting how Musk would find running this company a difficult preposition, Musk probably had second thoughts. He started talking about the problem of bots on Twitter and alleged that the company withheld information from him. Twitter denied the allegations. Yet, after a few weeks, Elon Musk unilaterally decided to terminate the deal.

Parag Agrawal stays firm

This is probably when Agrawal decided to hit back. Twitter defied Elon Musk and refused to terminate the deal from its side. At the same time, with Agrawal as its CEO, the company said that it would force Musk to go through the deal. No compromise at all. When the mutual agreements failed to materialise, Twitter filed a case against Musk, asking court to enforce the deal.

In the end, it was the court and the spectre of a messy lawsuit that probably made Musk change his mind. Days after texts between Musk and others were filed in the court as Exhibit and then came out in public, Elon Musk changed his mind. He told the court that he would go through with the deal and that he was willing to pay the same $44 billion for the company, a price that most experts find extremely generous.

The fact that Twitter management has virtually forced Elon Musk to pay an exorbitant amount of money for the company is a win in every possible way for Agrawal.

And Parag Agrawal put every effort into enforcing the deal knowing well that as soon as Musk got the company he would be fired. But the CEO’s post was not the prize here. The prize was the lucrative deal. Musk, realising that he was overpaying, tried to get out of it. He trolled and threw shades at Twitter, and its management. But Twitter and Agrawal remained focussed and didn’t let him get out of the deal. This is the reason why they are the winners of this Musk-Twitter saga. Now after taking control of Twitter, Elon Musk is putting on a brave face. But reality is that he has been humbled in this corporate war.

Least but last India expects Twitter To comply with Local Laws after Musk Takeover.

The violent chaos in Myanmar, a rapidly escalating crisis on India’s doorstep

ASEAN foreign ministers were meetingin Jakarta on Thursday to discuss their options in Myanmar, where the military is using increasingly violent methods to suppress the armed resistance against its February 2021 takeover.

Twenty months on, the junta has not been able to establish full control over the country. Many of Myanmar’s ethnic armed organisations (EAOs) have joined armed civilian groups called People’s Defence Force (PDF), which are allied to the self-declared National Unity Government (NUG) in exile.

The meet is being held ahead of the ASEAN and East Asia Summits in Cambodia from November 10 to 13, amid unprecedented differences among members of the grouping on how to deal with the regional crisis that has affected all of them in one way or another.

Much of the resistance by the civilian PDFs is in the Chin State and Sagaing Region, which share borders with Mizoram and Manipur. A fragile truce between some EAOs and the military dating back to 2018 has broken down. Many EAOs support the civilian rebellion, and the junta is fighting separate armed groups as well as the PDFs across the country.

On October 23, according to reports from Myanmar, over 60 people were killed in an airstrike by the Myanmar military in Kachin State, in an area famous for its jade mines some 400 km from Kohima as the crow flies.

The strike targeted an open air concert to celebrate the 62nd anniversary of the founding of the Kachin Independence Organisation, whose military wing, the Kachin Independence Army, has been fighting a protracted battle against Myanmar’s rulers. The military has said all casualties were combatants.

While the Myanmar army has routinely used air power against the EAOs, in the months since the coup, it has not hesitated to strike at civilians as well. Attack helicopters have been deployed against PDFs in the Sagaing and Magway Regions.

In Rakhine State, the military is fighting the Arakkan Army (AA), with the violence sometimes spilling over to Bangladesh. The AA, which is fighting for the independence of Rakhine, has kept its distance from the PDFs and the NUG. While the AA is anti-Rohingya, the NUG, comprising parliamentarians who were elected in 2020, has appeared to take a more progressive view on the Rohingya people, officially declaring that they are entitled to citizenship in Myanmar.

V On the political front, Aung San Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy who was jailed after the coup, has been convicted in multiple cases and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

As Elon Musk’s Twitter deal prepares to close, insiders expect ‘chaos’ as he burns the company to the ground and will sink

  • Elon Musk is set to own Twitter by the end of next week but has done little toward the transition.
  • Reports vary of what he intends to do with the business, but large cuts are expected.
  • “No one knows who or how this thing is running post-close,” one person familiar with the deal said.

Already he is started firing employees from top to bottom

There is going to be real chaos in coming days

Iran’s ‘Zombie Angelina Jolie’ Reveals Real Face After Release From Prison For Blasphemy

Sahar Tabar said she always wanted to become famous and chose the macabre makeover to gain international attention.

An Iranian woman who became famous on Instagram for posting spooky photos resembling Hollywood actor Angelia Jolie has revealed her real face after her release from jail. Sahar Tabar was arrested in October 2019 on charges of “corruption” and “blasphemy” and sentenced to 10 years in prison. But she was released after 14 months after widespread protests in the country, triggered by the death of Mahsa Amini last month. Ms Tabar was widely believed to have undergone cosmetic surgery, which made her look like the spooky version of Angelina Jolie.

After her release, the 21-year-old finally showed her real self to cameras this week, according to a report in

Many people had launched campaigns on social media for her release. Among them is activist Masih Alinejad. When she was jailed, Ms Alinejad had tweeted: “Sahar Tabar is only 19. Her joke landed her in jail. Her mother cries every day to get her innocent daughter freed. Dear Angelina Jolie, we need your voice here. Help us.”

After being released from jail, Ms Tabar said she had undergone some cosmetic procedures, like a nose job, lip fillers and liposuction, but stressed that the infamous images were a result of make-up and editing on Photoshop. Due to her spooky photos, she was called “zombie Angelina Jolie” on social media.

What you saw on Instagram was the computer effects I used to create the image,” she told a state-run outlet, as reported by news.com.au.

Ms Tabar, whose real name is Fatemeh Khishvand, said she always wanted to become famous and chose the macabre makeover to gain international attention. The woman also said that cyberspace provided an easy way. “It was much easier than becoming an actor,” the outlet further quoted her as saying.

Ms Tabar also said that the images were created as a “joke” and expressed regret. “My mother was telling me to stop, but I didn’t listen.”

The flying car that could turn into a biplane

At a launch event at Draper University in San Mateo, California, a start-up revealed how its flying car hopes to take off.

Alef bills its still-in-development electric vehicle, the Model A, as the first true flying car – a vehicle that it hopes will look like a sleek electric car but be capable of vertical take-off, and able to fly for 110km (68 miles).

The firm hopes to compete in a market occupied by well-advanced rivals, such as AirCar and the Pal-V gyrocopter that are already flying and driving.

But Jim Dukhovny, Alef’s chief executive and co-founder, argues most existing vehicles are not strictly flying cars in his opinion.

A flying car has to be a car, which means it can drive on a regular street, park in a regular parking space. And it also should have vertical take-off,” he told the BBC.

“If you require an airport to take-off, what problem are you solving? And why is this a flying car?”

Flip to fly

The top surface of the Model A’s car-like exterior is a mesh so that air can pass through to eight propellers inside the body which provide lift.

But flying any distance using these alone, without the assistance of wings, would require prohibitive amounts of power.

Alef’s proposed solution is novel – for longer flights the Model A transforms into a biplane.

After a vertical lift-off, the Model A will turn onto its side, the two-person cockpit swivels so the driver remains facing forward, and the car becomes a biplane with the long sides of the vehicle forming the top and bottom wings.

The classic biplane shape, with two wings, one on top of the other, is easier to see in the Model A if you imagine the mesh in-between the solid sides being removed. Alef has also produced a video visualising the transition.

Forbes observed that the way it would fly resembles the Opener Blackfly, an existing vertical take-off electric aircraft.

It’s an ingenious idea, but is it a practical one?

Bringing flying and driving together adds weight, electric power also means heavy batteries.

“The design is right on the ragged edge of what the physics and technology can do, which is where you would expect it to be,” says aeronautical engineer Professor Steve Wright of the University of the West of England.

The mesh, as visualised, might also cause significant aerodynamic drag, he adds.

Alef says it has managed the transition to biplane in “scaled flights” since 2018. And it has large prototypes capable of vertical flight – though they don’t yet resemble the polished appearance of the firm’s mock-ups and concepts.

But Prof Wright warns the jump from a prototype to a working product is easily underestimated.

A prototype of the Model A

Technical hurdles are only one obstacle to building highways in the sky busy with flying cars.

The regulation and certification of flying cars is likely to be rigorous, time-consuming and expensive, as it is for any aircraft.

To fly a biplane, even one that you can drive on the roads, will require a pilots licence – though Mr Dukhovny envisions that for short low-level hops over obstacles using vertical flight, a licence used for drone operators might suffice.

And authorities are likely to impose strict rules on where vehicles can be flown.

‘Where we’re going, we don’t need roads’

For these and other reasons, Prof Wright thinks the future of flying cars will not be a single vehicle that consumers own, drive and fly.

In the film Back to the Future, the character Doc Brown’s fusion-powered DeLorean car leaves the road and swoops into the air.

“That isn’t how mass airborne transport is going to play out, which is a real shame. I really want my flying DeLorean as much as anybody does,” Prof Wright says.

A DeLorean at the 2016 Comic-Con in Los Angeles

In reality, travelling by flying car, Prof Wright argues, would be more like hiring a taxi.

“You pull out your phone, and a robot car would draw up and it would take you to somewhere the size of a small park and the drone comes down, sets itself down, you jump in there. So in other words, you summon a drone taxi.”

Many companies are developing autonomous passenger drones. Recently Chinese firm Xpeng gave its first public demonstration of its X2 vehicle in Dubai

But Mr Dukhovny strongly believes that the idea of being able to drive and fly in the same vehicle is an attractive one. When I ask him who will pay the Model A’s initial $300,000 (£266,000) price tag, he says “early adopters”.

He says people have been waiting for a flying car for a 100 years. Alef’s ambitious goal is to start selling vehicles in 2025.

Biden and Zelenesky Dangerous New Ukraine Endgame:

With his strategy to “weaken” Russia, the Joe Biden and Zelenesky may be turning the Ukraine war into a global one.

U.S. President Joe Biden and his NATO allies have escalated their policy of helping to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression into a policy of undermining the power and influence of Russia itself. In so doing, some observers fear, they are leaving Russian President Vladimir Putin little choice but to surrender or double down militarily, raising the possibility of widening his war beyond Ukraine.

The new U.S. and NATO strategy is partly based on Ukraine’s continuing battlefield success against Putin, who has been forced to scale down his ambitions from a full takeover of Ukraine to a major new assault in its eastern and southern parts. NATO allies including Germany, which until this week had equivocated on sending heavy offensive weaponry to Ukraine, have ratcheted up their aid in response. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, under political pressure at home and abroad, announced earlier this week that his country would provide 50 anti-aircraft tanks to Ukraine.

Yet other Russia experts expressed worry that the United States and its Western allies are, in effect, crossing the very redlines they have avoided until now. For most of the two-month conflict, Biden has refused to authorize any military support, such as major offensive weapons or a no-fly zone, that might be perceived as putting U.S. or NATO forces in direct conflict with Russia. Now, some observers worry that with the additional aid and tougher economic sanctions, the U.S. president is forcing Putin into a corner in which he can only fight on or surrender. The latter course would mean relinquishing Putin’s career-long aim of strengthening Russia against the West. Yet Putin, who has long said the West’s goal was to weaken or contain Russia, has never been known to surrender during his decade and a half of aggressive moves against neighboring countries, mainly Ukraine and Georgia.

“In the Kremlin’s eyes the West is out to get Russia. It was unspoken before. Now it’s spoken,” said Sean Monaghan, an expert on Europe at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. “If you combine this with Biden’s comments, at his summit in Poland last month, that ‘this man [Putin] cannot remain in power,’ all that turns this a territorial war into a wider confrontation and might make negotiating a settlement to end the war in Ukraine far more difficult or even impossible at the present.” (Biden officials later said that the president was not seeking regime change in Russia.)

George Beebe, a former chief of Russia analysis for the CIA, said that the Biden administration may be in danger of forgetting that the “the most important national interest that the United States has is avoiding a nuclear conflict with Russia.” He added that “the Russians have the ability to make sure everyone else loses if they lose too. And that may be where we’re heading. It’s a dangerous corner to turn.”

Angry Passenger’s Wife And Children Kicked Off Plane Causes Outrage

Qantas flight attendant has been filmedhaving a tense interaction with a passenger. The passenger claims the staff was being rude to his wife and children.

A passenger filmed a heated argument between a flight attendant and another passenger on a Qantas flight back in September. The video captured the man yelling at the stewardess. He stated the crew was behaving nasty toward his wife and children who were teething at the time. Then during their interaction, he mentioned the crew members had left his wife in tears.

Get out of my face.” An Australian family has been kicked off their Qantas flight home from Bali, after a tense altercation with flight attendants. Full details, tonight on

What happened

“They made her cry and she’s crying because they were being rude to her. With a newborn baby,” said the man arguing with the staff in the video.

The back and forth between the passenger and the stewardess begins to get worse as she’s seen holding her hand up to the man and asking him to “Stop”. The man just continues yelling over and over again demanding an apology. After the attendant see the man isn’t calming down they eventually ask him and his family to get off the plane.

Police called

“Unless you carry my kids out, force them out, we’re not leaving,” he says.

Then in one instance, he says: “Bring the police here,” to which the flight attendant responds: “We are.”

The man continues to argue with the attendant and the rest of the crew until they consider him to be uncontrollable.

“I told you, sir, you were swearing at my crew,” she says.

“You can’t upset my crew.”

He responds, “You’re getting angry at my wife because both of them (their kids) are double teething.”

He then says: “You can’t upset my family and kids. What are you talking about: ‘You can’t upset my crew,’ my wife is crying.”

“Tell security to come and take me by the balls,” he later adds.

Then finally he tells the flight attendant: “Get out of my face,” before the staff walks off for the second time.

As reported to News.com, a spokesperson for Qantas stated the family was removed from the airplane after “abusing our crew several times before the flight departing Bali”.

A statement from Qantas

“The safety of our customers and crew is our number one priority and we do not tolerate any kind of abusive behavior,” the spokesperson also said.

“We ask customers to follow the direction of the crew for the safety and comfort of everyone on board.”

In the comments, users were mixed in their response, with some siding with the airline, while others stated the man was defending his family.

A lot of users had mixed feelings on the matter. Many sided with the airline claiming he was being too aggressive with the crew members. Others sided with the man and his family since there were little babies involved. Clearly a simple apology might’ve deescalated the situation or the man could’ve kept a more level head and just made a formal complaint with the airline once they got to their destination.

Let us know how you would’ve handled this interaction as the passenger or as the stewardess.

It’s paradise: PSG coach Galtier chuffed with Messi, Neymar and Mbappe show in 7-2 win over Maccabi

Highlights

  • Messi scored twice, denied a record 9th Champions League hat-trick
  • Kylian Mbappe netted a brace, Neymar came up with a goal
  • PSG qualified for the Round of 16 of Champions League for 11th straight time
Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe scored in PSG’s win

Paris Saint-Germain coach Christopher Galtier was over the moon after the Ligue 1 giants put on an incredible display of attacking football, beating Maccabi Haifa 7-2 in their penultimate Group H game of the Champions League. PSG’s big stars lit up Le Parc des Princes with Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe scoring twice each and Neymar chipping in with a goal as well.

PSG were in full flow with Messi and Mbappe putting on a show as the French giants qualified for the Round of 16 of the Champions League after their 7-2 win. PSG are at the top of the Group H table with 11 points while Benfica are at the 2nd spot. Juventus, who were beaten by Benfica on Tuesday, failed to make it to the knockout stage of the premier European club football competition.

Galtier did not have to worry about permutations and combinations and just enjoy the show put on by MNM – Messi, Neymar and Mbappe.

“I saw the players enjoy themselves, and that’s very important,” Galtier said. “I had to think about how our fantastic three players up front could express themselves as best as possible and that the system could be very important.

“It’s very pleasant to train them, to see them play every day. For a coach, it’s paradise.”

PSG made it to the Champions League Round of 16 for the 11th straight session. Messi would have added to his tally but he was denied a record 9th Champions League hat-trick by the crossbar.

Not just the fans but even their teammates were awestruck by the display from the potent trio of forwards combined well throughout the evening.

“I had a front-row seat to watch them tonight,” PSG midfielder Vitinha said. “We’re all impressed, because they do things that others can’t. It’s really a privilege.”

The U.S. and Europe are running out of weapons to send to Ukraine

Ukraine War: For months, the United States and other NATO members have sent billions of dollars worth of weapons and equipment into Ukraine to help it fight back against Russia.

Weapons shortages across Europe could force hard choices for Ukraine’s allies as they balance their support for Ukraine against the risk that Russia could target them next.

For months, the United States and other NATO members have sent billions of dollars worth of weapons and equipment into Ukraine to help it fight back against Russia.

In the U.S. weapons industry, the normal production level for artillery rounds for the 155 millimeter howitzer — a long-range heavy artillery weapon currently used on the battlefields of Ukraine — is about 30,000 rounds per year in peacetime.

The Ukrainian soldiers fighting invading Russian forces go through that amount in roughly two weeks.

That’s according to Dave Des Roches, an associate professor and senior military fellow at the U.S. National Defense University. And he’s worried.

“I’m greatly concerned. Unless we have new production, which takes months to ramp up, we’re not going to have the ability to supply the Ukrainians,” Des Roches told CNBC.

Europe is running low, too. “The military stocks of most [European NATO] member states have been, I wouldn’t say exhausted, but depleted in a high proportion, because we have been providing a lot of capacity to the Ukrainians,” Josep Borrell, the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, said earlier this month.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg held a special meeting of the alliance’s arms directors on Tuesday to discuss ways to refill member nations’ weapons stockpiles.

Military analysts point to a root issue: Western nations have been producing arms at much smaller volumes during peacetime, with governments opting to slim down very expensive manufacturing and only producing weapons as needed. Some of the weapons that are running low are no longer being produced, and highly skilled labor and experience are required for their production — things that have been in short supply across the U.S. manufacturing sector for years.

A US M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) firing salvoes during a military exercise on June 30, 2022. The U.S. Department of Defense has announced that the U.S. will be sending Ukraine another $270 million in security assistance, a package which will include high mobility artillery rocket systems and a significant number of tactical drones.

Indeed, Stoltenberg said during last week’s U.N. General Assembly that NATO members need to reinvest in their industrial bases in the arms sector.

“We are now working with industry to increase production of weapons and ammunition,” Stoltenberg told The New York Times, adding that countries needed to encourage arms makers to expand their capacity longer term by putting in more weapons orders.

But ramping up defense production is no quick or easy feat.

Is the U.S. ability to defend itself at risk?

The short answer: no.

The U.S. has been by far the largest supplier of military aid to Ukraine in its war with Russia, providing $15.2 billion in weapons packages to date since Moscow invaded its neighbor in late February. Several of the American-made weapons have been game changers for the Ukrainians; particularly the 155 mm howitzers and long-range heavy artillery like the Lockheed Martin-made HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System). And the Biden administration has said it will support its ally Ukraine for “as long as it takes” to defeat Russia.

That means a whole lot more weapons.

The U.S. has essentially run out of the 155 mm howitzers to give to Ukraine; to send any more, it would have to dip into its own stocks reserved for U.S. military units that use them for training and readiness. But that’s a no-go for the Pentagon, military analysts say, meaning the supplies reserved for U.S. operations are highly unlikely to be affected.

There are a number of systems where I think the Department of Defense has reached the levels where it’s not willing to provide more of that particular system to Ukraine,” said Mark Cancian, a former U.S. Marine Corps colonel and a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

That’s because “the United States needs to maintain stockpiles to support war plans,” Cancian said. “For some munitions, the driving war plan would be a conflict with China over Taiwan or in the South China Sea; for others, particularly ground systems, the driving war plan would be North Korea or Europe.”

Javelins, HIMARs and howitzers

What this means for Ukrainian forces is that some of their most crucial battlefield equipment – like the 155 mm howitzer – is having to be replaced with older and less optimum weaponry like the 105 mm howitzer, which has a smaller payload and a shorter range.

“And that’s a problem for the Ukrainians,” Des Roches says, because “range is critical in this war. This is an artillery war.”

Other weapons Ukraine relies on that are now classified as “limited” in the U.S. inventory include HIMARS launchers, Javelin missiles, Stinger missiles, the M777 Howitzer and 155 mm ammunition.

The Javelin, produced by Raytheon and Lockheed Martin, has gained an iconic role in Ukraine — the shoulder-fired, precision-guided anti-tank missile has been indispensable in combating Russian tanks. But production in the U.S. is low at a rate of around 800 per year, and Washington has now sent some 8,500 to Ukraine, according to the CSIS — more than a decades’ worth of production.

President Joe Biden visited a Javelin plant in Alabama in May, saying he would “make sure the United States and our allies can replenish our own stocks of weapons to replace what we’ve sent to Ukraine.” But, he added, “this fight is not going to be cheap.”

The Pentagon has ordered hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of new Javelins, but ramping up takes time — the numerous suppliers that provide the chemicals and computer chips for each missile can’t all be sufficiently sped up. And hiring, vetting and training people to build the technology also takes time. It could take between one and four years for the U.S. to boost overall weapons production significantly, Cancian said.

“We need to put our defense industrial base on a wartime footing,” Des Roches said. “And I don’t see any indication that we have.”

https://amp.cnbc.com/amp/ampvideo?id=107112095&refUrl=https://cnbc.com/amp/2022/09/28/the-us-and-europe-are-running-out-of-weapons-to-send-to-ukraine.html#amp=1

The U.S. Department of Defense disputed the suggestion that the U.S. is running low on its weapons stockpiles for Ukraine.

“The Department has provided a mix of capabilities to Ukraine – we, and they, are not over-reliant on any one system,” DOD spokesperson Jessica Maxwell told CNBC in an email. “We have been able to transfer equipment from U.S. stocks to Ukraine while managing risks to military readiness.”

The Pentagon is “working with industry to replenish depleted stocks on an accelerated basis,” Maxwell said. “This includes providing funding to buy more equipment, set up new production lines, and support additional worker shifts. We still have the necessary inventory for our needs.”

The DOD’s latest military assistance package, she added, “underscores the lasting nature of our commitment and represents a sustainable, multi-year investment in critical capabilities for Ukraine.”

A Lockheed Martin spokesman, when contacted for comment, referenced an April interview during which the company’s CEO, Jim Taiclet, told CNBC: “We’ve got to get our supply chain ramped up, we’ve got to have some capacity, which we’re already investing to do. And then the deliveries happen, say, six, 12, 18 months down the road.”

What are Ukraine’s options?

In the meantime, Ukraine can look elsewhere for suppliers — for instance South Korea, which has a formidable weapons sector and in August signed a sale to Poland for $5.7 billion worth of tanks and howitzers. Ukrainian forces will also have to work with replacement weapons that are often less optimal.

Jack Watling, an expert on land warfare at the Royal United Services Institute in London, believes there is still ample scope for Ukraine to supply itself with many of the weapons it needs.

“There is sufficient time to resolve that problem before it becomes critical in terms of stepping up manufacture,” Watling said, noting that Kyiv can source certain ammunition from countries that don’t immediately need theirs, or whose stocks are about to expire.

“So we can continue to supply Ukraine,” Watling said, “but there is a point where especially with certain critical natures, the Ukrainians will need to be cautious about their rate of expenditure and where they prioritize those munitions, because there isn’t an infinite supply.”

Devastated to lose my husband: Kiran Mazumdar-Shah

Bengaluru: Biocon founder Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw said she was devastated to lose her husband and will miss him profoundly.

John Shaw, who had served the Bengaluru-headquartered biopharmaceutical company as the Vice-Chairman and Non-Executive Director for over 22 years, passed away at a private hospital here on Monday.

“I am devastated to lose my husband, my mentor and soul mate. I will always be spiritually guided by John as I pursue my purpose. Rest in Peace my darling John. Thank you for making my life so very special. I will miss you profoundly,” Mazumdar-Shah said.

John Shaw, a Scotsman and Indophile, headed a leading textiles MNC Madura Coats as Chairman and Managing Director before joining Biocon in 1999.

“He has contributed majorly to the transformation of Biocon from a small enzymes company to a globally recognised biopharmaceutical company and has played an important role in ensuring the highest levels of corporate governance in the company, as well as, in the financial and strategic development of the group,” the company said.

Mia Bhuta, the Indian-American who left her mark on and off the field at Fifa U-17 World Cup

“India has so much potential. There’s so much talent here. The world needs to invest in them more. They need to believe in young girls and give them the opportunities to succeed. And I think they can go really far.”

Even after a whirlwind three days where Indian-origin Mia Bhuta grabbed headlines and scored arguably the best goal of the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, she never loses sight of her goal to inspire young Indian girls, to champion better things for women’s football, be an ambassador for the game.

Lofty ambitions for a 16-year-old? Maybe, but then again Mia is no ordinary teenager.

Astam and Mia, India and USA – stark contrasts but also a sign of what’s possible

The Pittsburgh native’s talent with her feet is immediately apparent – as is her composure and poise when speaking to the media. The consensus amongst the Indian journalists interviewing her was maybe that’s ‘just the confidence of an American teenager’. We are swiftly disavowed of that notion in a Zoom call, when even grizzled old veterans of the Pittsburgh media remark that they’ve never seen a youth-team player be as articulate.

Ironically, it’s one of the few moments when Mia’s left speechless – “…er I’m glad it’s good?” she laughs.

Aaron Heifetz, the long-serving press officer for the US national team, speaks of Mia in glowing terms. The affection is palpable, and almost like a proud father, he shows a small group of media gathered to watch the USA train, childhood photos of Mia growing up.

Her actual father? Also very proud, after taking in Team USA’s 8-0 win over India from the stands and waiting over an hour after to meet Mia, despite the stadium lights being shut down. Why an hour? Well, Mia was one of two randomly selected players to go for doping control after the game – and it’s also where she found out Megan Rapinoe had congratulated her on social media.

“Yeah, that was crazy. She’s someone that I’ve always looked up to. She’s an incredible player, so I look up to her for her abilities on the field. But off the field, she just seems like an even better person. I’ve never met her personally, but I’ve just seen how much she’s done for the game and how much she speaks up on other matters that are important to her. So I also look up to her for those reasons.”

So just having someone like her supporting me really meant so much. It was like an incredible moment. I still can’t even believe that she knows who I am.”

Like Rapinoe, the world is waking up to Mia’s incredible story, which began with Vyom Bhuta, her father, leaving Rajkot for the US at the age of 16, pursuing a tennis dream and better educational opportunities as an exchange student, initially in New York. Vyom later went to Mercyhurst, PA for college, where he met Mia’s mom, who was from Pittsburgh. Decades later, Mia’s parents were in the stands screaming as their daughter scored in India, against India.

“They’re one of the main reasons why I’ve been able to make it here. They’ve sacrificed so much for me to be here, and honestly, if it wasn’t for them, I know I would not be here. My parents have done so much just to help with my development.”

It wasn’t just Mia’s immediate family that was glad, extended family group chats of relatives in India were inundated with videos of her goal. Even her grandfather, recovering from surgery in a hospital, has been doing better after being shown her history-making strike.

Yet, amidst all the congratulatory messages that blew up Mia’s phone following her strike (she even had teammate and close friend, Gisele Thompson, lock her out of her phone so she could focus), she holds dear the messages from young Indian girls, who’ve let her known she’s inspired them.

And she’s been inspired too. Inspired to ask the world to do better for women’s football, saying, “We’ve seen in a lot of countries that girls don’t have the same opportunities to play sports. So first off, it’s a call to everyone else around the world that, hey, we need your support. In the past, we’ve seen women have a large impact on their families, but I think now we’re starting to have a significant impact on society and we have a larger scope of influence. So when I play, I hope to encourage young girls to continue to believe in themselves and know that with hard work they can achieve anything.”

There’s still a tournament to focus on, though, and even after this World Cup, Mia plans on heading off to Stanford (enrolling a semester early), but doesn’t want to turn pro yet. “I really do value my education, so that’s kind of what’s up next for me,” she says. There’s little doubt now that she’s definitely had an Indian upbringing.

It only follows then, that being a young Indian-American girl, which player could have inspired her to take up the sport?

“Messi, he was the first soccer player that I looked up to. I’m a huge Barca fan. I know he’s gone now, but that was the team that I loved growing up. He’s one of the best players to ever play…incredible. He’s amazing.”

Hyderabad at No. 4, Among India’s most polluted City, mainly due to auto fumes

File Photo The air pollution level in the city was categorized unhealthy with the Air Quality Index (AQI) of 159, according to the data on IQAir website on October 21.

Hyderabad: Among major Indian cities, Hyderabad is ranked as the fourth most polluted city after Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai and it is the most polluted mega city in the southern part of the country.

The air pollution level in the city was categorized unhealthy with the Air Quality Index (AQI) of 159, according to the data on IQAir website on October 21.

The main pollutant was Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 or small particles with the primary sources of this being automobiles and industries. Analysts say vehicles contribute one-third of the air pollution in the city.

PM2.5 concentration in Hyderabad was 70.4 micrograms per cubic metre of air. This was 14.1 times the World Health Organisation (WHO) annual air quality guideline value.

Experts have attributed vehicular pollution as the single biggest reason for deteriorating air quality in Hyderabad in addition to fossil fuel burning, construction, opening landfill burning and landfill fires of solid waste

Like many other cities in India and the world, Hyderabad failed to meet the WHO air quality criteria of 5 micrograms per cubic metre of air.

According to healthcare practitioners small particles pose the greatest risk to human health. While the nose can filter most coarse particles, fine and ultrafine particles are inhaled deeper into the lungs where they can be deposited or even pass into the bloodstream.

As per the World Air Quality Report 2021 by IQAir, a Swiss-based air quality technology company, during 2021 Hyderabad was found to be the fourth-worst polluted city in India with rise in PM 2.5 levels from 34.7 micrograms per cubic metre of air in 2020 to 39.4 in 2021.

The PM 2.5 level in the city had declined between 2017 and 2020 and this was attributed to green drive and strict automobile emission norms. However, the report noted that it began to rise in 2021.

The report revealed that while the average PM 2.5 during 2021 was 39.4 micrograms per cubic metre of air, it touched as high as 68.4 during December. July was relatively better with PM 2.5 hovering in the 12 micrograms per cubic metre of air range. However, even this is twice the value of 5 the permissible limit set by the WHO.

The pollution level of various Indian cities were analysed between November 20, 2020 to November 20, 2021 and the results were compared with both the prescribed air quality standards as referred by WHO and National Ambient Air Quality (NAAQS).

The report found that in terms of PM2.5, Hyderabad had an annual average of a little over 40 points, higher than NAAQS and WHO annual standards which are at 40 points and 5 points respectively. In terms of PM 10, the city had an annual average of 75 to 80 points. The NAAQS and WHO annual standards suggest this pollutant must not exceed 60 points and 15 points respectively.

Amongst the six pollution monitoring sites, the highest annual pollution levels were observed in Sanath Nagar, followed by Zoo Park and Bolarum both in terms of PM 2.5 and PM 10.

Air pollution is a significant contributor to illness and increased mortality rates and can be measured by the Air Quality Index (AQI).

The AQI quantifies five air pollutants (Ground level ozone, Carbon monoxide, Sulfur dioxide, Nitrogen dioxide, Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) AQI of 0 to 50 is consistent with good air quality; AQI of 51 to 100 is consistent with moderate air quality, AQI of greater than 100 is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, value greater than 300 signifies hazardous conditions.

Higher air pollution levels are associated with increased cardiovascular, respiratory illnesses and increased frequency and severity of Covid-19 infections.

According to Dr V.V. Ramana Prasad, Consultant Pulmonologist, KIMS Hospitals, Hyderabad, as vehicular pollution increased along with seasonal viral infections, people who are getting exposed to pollution are developing new onset bronchial asthma with symptoms of cold sneezing chest discomfort dry cough and wheezing.

“Few of the elderly patients with Comorbidities like diabetes, chronic kidney and liver diseases are developing pneumonias both bacterial and viral due to excessive exposure to pollution and cool weather. Avoiding the indoor and outdoor pollution, quitting smoking, wearing proper masks at polluted workplaces and taking influenza and pneumococcal vaccines prevents pollution related lung diseases,” he said.

Dr. R. Aditya Vadan, Consultant Pulmonology, SLG Hospitals, believes that air pollution and lung health go hand in hand. More the pollution, worse the lung function and overall health of an individual.

“In general northern states in India are more polluted than the southern states. However among the southern states Hyderabad would be among the top 2 or 3 highly polluted cities in terms of air pollution,” he said.

“The population could develop pulmonary tuberculosis, asthma Copd contact dermatitis, bladder cancer, peripheral neuropathy, or pulmonary fibrosis due to occupational/environmental exposures. Interestingly most of the conditions are partially or completely reversible once the exposure is off. We notice people living in highly polluted areas have poor asthma control in spite of adequate treatment. When they relocate to a non polluted or less polluted area their symptoms tend to decrease.

“I suggest all my patients move to a less polluted or if possible to a non polluted area. I also suggest everyone to wear a mask while leaving their homes, preferably the one which protects against PM2.5 and PM10 as the levels of these pollutants are on a rise,” he added.

In January 2022, the government ofTelangana had constituted a state level monitoring and implementation committee to improve air quality in Hyderabad.

The nine-member committee is headed by the chief secretary. It was constituted for implementation of 15th Finance Commission’s recommendations to million plus cities for augmenting the measures to improve air quality.

The committee members include special chief secretary, environment, secretary, state urban development department, representative of Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), chairman, State Pollution Control Board (SPCB), secretary, state transport department, a representative from the state chamber of commerce and industries, commissioner and director of municipal administration and commissioner, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).

However, there is still no official word on whether the committee made recommendations or any action was taken on the same.

Hyderabad: Prayers offered at Bhagya Lakshmi temple near Charminar

The police deployed Rapid Action Force and local civil police for maintaining law and order. The deployment will continue till Wednesday when the rush will decrease.

Hyderabad: Thousands of devotees thronged the Bhagya Lakshmi temple, adjacent to the Charminar, to offer prayers on the occasion of Diwali on Monday evening. The temple will allow people to have ‘darshan’ at the temple till 3 a.m and later close the temple for the day due to partial solar eclipse.

Devotees from across the city visit the temple on Diwali to seek blessings of the deity. The temple committee as a tradition hands over a currency coin as a gift to the visitors.

Long queues were witnessed at the temple stretching until Gulzar Houz and beyond and local traders put up banners to welcome the devotees. Free drinking water supply arrangements are made.

Devotees consider visiting the temple auspicious on Diwali festival. Since, last few years the crowd at the temple swells on the festival days and the temple is decorated with flowers and special lights.

The police deployed Rapid Action Force and local civil police for maintaining law and order. The deployment will continue till Wednesday when the rush will decrease.

Diwali is observed on the 15th day of Kartik, the holiest month in the Hindu lunar calendar and it is believed that on this day Lord Rama (the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu) returned from a 14-year-long exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demon king Ravan.

Diwali brings Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb to the fore

Ganga–Jamuni Tehzeeb (Hindustanifor GangesYamuna Culture), also spelled as Ganga-Jamni Tehzeeb or just Hindustani Tehzeeb, is the high culture that arose in the Yamuna-Gangetic plains of northern India, the Hindustan region,[1][2] a syncretic fusionof Hindu Yamuna-Gangetic society with the IslamicPersian culture.[3][4][5][6][7][8]With the rise of Persianate control over the subcontinent, the tehzeeb also spread, especially along the wider Indo-Gangetic Plains. Contemporarily, Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb conveys either the syncretic Indo-Persian civilization or the specific Hindu-Muslim brotherhood.[9]

The Mughal emperor Jahangir celebrates Holi with ladies of the zenana.

The culture arose following the Persianate control of the Gangetic plains, especially along the tributary Yamunawhich includes Delhi from where the native tongue(Khariboli) of which evolved into Hindavi or Hindustani, a prestige sociolect of the cultured, eventually becoming the basis for a lingua franca on the plains and beyond before standardization into Hindi and Urdu during the British Raj. The tehzeebincludes a particular style of speech, literature, recreation, costume, manners, worldview, art, architecture and cuisine which more or less pervades the Hindustan region of the plains, Northern South Asia as a whole and the old city of Hyderabad in South India.

Ganga-Jamuni tehzeeb, is a poetic Awadhi phrase for the distinctive and syncretic Hindu-Muslim culture, is reflected in the fused spiritual connotations, forms, symbols, aesthetics, crafts and weaves, for example, Kashmiri Muslim carpet makers feature Durga in their patterns, Muslim sculptors making idols of Durga, and Hindu craftsmen create the Muharramtazia.[12][8][13]

Days After ‘Threatening’ Saudi Arabia, US Nuclear Submarine Makes A Very Rare Appearance In The Arabian Sea

All is not well in and around the Arabian Sea. While Iran tried to steal U.S. unmanned surface vessels, tensions are also brewing between the U.S. and its seasoned ally Saudi Arabia. Against this backdrop, a U.S. nuclear submarine has made a rare and startling appearance in the region.

General Erik Kurilla, commander of Centom, conducted a visit aboard the USS West Virginia, a US Navy Ohio-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine at an undisclosed location at sea in international waters in the Arabian Sea. Photo: US Central Command

In a highly unusual move, the U.S. Central Command revealed that an Ohio-class nuclear submarine was sailing in the Arabian Sea. The announcement was made as the top U.S. military commander for the Middle East boarded the ballistic missile submarine to assess the Navy’s capability.

General Erik Kurilla went aboard the USS West Virginia submarine for about eight hours as the submarine rose to the surface and appeared at an unknown location in the Arabian Sea.

About 14 Ohio class ballistic missile submarines, also known as SSBNs, are currently active in the U.S. Navy. While the maximum load out for the Ohio SSBNs was 24 Trident nuclear-armed submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBM) earlier, it has been reduced to 20 due to arms control agreements with Russia.

General Kurilla said in a statement: “I was thoroughly impressed with the crew of the USS West Virginia; these sailors represent the highest level of professionalism, expertise, and discipline across the U.S. military.”

He added, “These submarines are the crown jewel of the nuclear triad, and West Virginia demonstrates the flexibility, survivability, readiness, and capability of USCENTCOM and USSTRATCOM [U.S. Strategic Command] forces at sea.”

It is pertinent to note that it is an extremely unlikely move on the part of the U.S. military to disclose the location of its nuclear submarines, so rare that it has only been done a few times in the past.

Saudi crown prince to visit Delhi next month

Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) Mohammad bin Salman is expected to visit India in mid-November while on his way to the G20 summit in Indonesia’s Bali.

<p>Mohammed bin Salman<br></p>

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who visited Riyadh in September for bilateral talks, had conveyed Mr. Modi’s invitation to Mr. Salman, asking him to visit at an “early date”. Sources say the visit of the Saudi leader could cast doubt over Mr. Modi’s attendance at meetings with the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), and the 18-member East Asian Summit (EAS) leaders meeting in Cambodia around the same time.

During their meeting, PM Salman and PM Modi are expected to exchange views on the present energy security scenario due to the Russian war in Ukraine, and the western coalition sanctions that neither Indianor the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has joined. The visit has geopolitical significance given U.S.-Saudi tensions over oil production cuts by the OPEC+ grouping that includes Russia, after which U.S. President Joseph Biden, who will also be in Bali, had warned of “consequences” for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Finding the inner gold

a visitor’s spiritual journey through Bhutan

Jigmi Wangdi

Karen Darke has been paralyzed from the chest down following a sea cliff climbing accident when she was only 21. She turned 51 this year.

A Paralympic Gold Medalist, para-triathlete, and author, Karen Darke has travelled the world despite her limitations. Karen was one of the many foreigners who entered Bhutan on September 23.

Karen and her team of nine other foreigners cycled from Paro to Bumthang. She said that it had been a lifelong dream to visit Bhutan.

I wanted to come to Bhutan 30 years ago when I first heard about it,” she said.

Ever since her recovery, Karen has been able to hand-cycle around many of the Himalayan ranges in countries such as Pakistan, India, and Nepal but never Bhutan.

“The fabric of Buddhism, of compassion and of kindness is so strong here and that makes it a special country, it is a privilege to be here,” she said.

She said that the USD 200 sustainable development fund was a very interesting module that would ensure Bhutan manage its foreign visitors while also serving as a means to increase the nation’s income.

“The SDF safeguards Bhutan’s unique identity that focuses on the values of sustainability and protection of the natural environment. For most people, it will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to visit,” she added.

Karen said that the values that the country is trying to promote are something that every Bhutanese embodies.

“Everywhere we’ve been you just feel like people care for each other, the environment and for nature. So it is very special for us to come and experience that,” she said.

Karen shared that she was able to feel the ‘High Value’ that the country wants foreigners to find when visiting.

“Where else do you get to sleep in a monastery with the monks and chant prayers at 4 in the morning with nuns and have dinner with a reincarnated Rinpoche,” she said. “It really has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

Nitin Gadkari: We may take over state highways!

The nation’s apex body vested with the duty of constructing roads, highways and other transportation-related tasks – the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways recently announced a significant plan that it’s contemplating to execute. The Center is exploring a proposal under which it would take over state roadways with high traffic densities for expansion, according to Nitin Gadkari, the union minister in charge of MoRTH. A state roadway will be made four or six lanes wide by the Center, and it will then collect tolls for 25 years before giving the asset back to the state.

The union minister while speaking at a conference held by the Association of National Exchanges Members of India (ANMI) said, ” We will take that highway from the state government (and) will collect the toll. ” Gadkari voiced confidence that, after a period of 12–13 years, the money being spent on a specified highway’s expansion, together with interests and land acquisition fees, will be entirely recovered from those state roadways. In addition, he pushed for collaboration in infrastructure investment and urged that the investments in the industry will be risk-free and profitable for the nation.

Gadkari during the conference also added, “The financial markets need to come up with innovative models to fund India’s Infrastructure growth. We are inviting investments in the PPP model. We can export energy to the world if we channel our investments to waste management, green hydrogen, solar, and several such projects. Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Science, and Technology is the wealth of future India,”

However, the MoRTh chief did not go into further specifics on how the evinced plan, including whether the Centre is in discussions with any states, the overall budget, or whether such an activity would be carried out in collaboration with a commercial firm. Although what the minister did mention was the number of ongoing projects, including 75 access-controlled expressways that would enable quicker circulation of people and commodities around the nation.

According to Gadkari, the Maharashtra state capital would be accessible by car in five hours thanks to a proposal to build an expressway between Bengaluru and Mumbai. He further stated that there are many chances in the road sector thanks to the work done and the intentions of the government in his virtual speech to the investors in the audience. The minister stated that the internal rate of return on such investments will be extremely excellent. Although it was added by Gadkari that the only thing he is now concerned about is currency volatility, which makes the landing cost of foreign currency due to hedging very expensive.

He also added that the government believes that the total revenue of the auto industry is predicted to increase by a factor of two over the course of the next five years, from Rs 7.5 lakh crore to Rs 15 lakh crore. Gadkari stated without providing a timeframe for the same that the administration is particularly keen on developing public choices and anticipates that the number of buses would increase from the current 1.5 lakh to 10 lakh. According to Gadkari, there is also a proposal to create “bus ports” that are similar to airports, where the Center would transform bus depots that are situated on prestigious properties into upscale facilities with hotels and restaurants.

On the ‘happiness’ trail in Bhutan

The Trans Bhutan Trail passes through various monasteries and fortresses along its way. PIC COURTESY KEN SPENCE

It’s true that some of the world’s most gorgeous scenery is off-limits to all but those who lace up their boots and head into the wild. This is what I did after landing in Bhutan to walk the Trans Bhutan Trail after the country finally reopened for tourism on September 23.

The trail history

For hundreds of years, the Trans Bhutan Trail was an important trade, pilgrimage and communication route. In fact, until the 1906s when the national highway was constructed, it was the only way to travel across the country. For the first time in 60 years, the kingdom of Bhutan has opened this sacred hiking trail that traverses from Haa in the west of Bhutan to Trashigang in the east (near the Tibet border) and spans 403 km.

Hiking the entire trail takes about a month, but because it’s broken into sections you can choose the length of your hike. Day hike or multi-day journey, solo or with a group — there is something for every trekker. I chose a three-hour trek from Dochula Pass to Thingleygang to dip my toes into the trail. This section of the trail is considered one of the most beautiful, coursing through rhododendron forests and soaring trees whispering the ancient secrets of this mystical region. The colourful prayer flags tied to the trees add a spiritual dimension while the mighty Himalayas behind the veil of thick mists look like a spectacular painting. Though the hike isn’t technically difficult, I was soon breathless from the ascent and descent. After three hours and 30 minutes, a sloping pathway takes us to a small group of village houses built in the distinct Bhutanese style featuring carved timber windowpanes and wood-lined arched roofs. This is also the spot where our car for the onward journey is parked. The pleasantly exhausting day ends at a campsite with other hikers eager to swap stories and toast the day’s accomplishments.

A vacation beyond walks

The Trans Bhutan Trail is not just a series of endless treks but also involves Bhutan’s famous sights along the way. In Punakha, a visit to the Chimi Lhakhang (also known as the Fertility Temple) is on the itinerary. This revered place of magic and miracles is where women struggling to conceive are made to carry a wooden phallus around the temple three times. Then there is the Punakha Dzong arguably the most beautiful dzong in the country and one of the top three sights in Bhutan, the two others being the Tiger Nest Monastery and Dochula Pass. Access to the dzong is across through a suspension bridge and the entry is via steep wooden stairs. The massive gold statues of the Buddha, exceptional murals and courtyards studded with bodhi trees make this dzong one of the most impressive in Bhutan. Enthused by the success of my maiden trek in Bhutan, I attempted another one along the Trans Bhutan Trail — Simtokha to Hongtsho.

This one was epic mainly because of the scenery and the remoteness of the trek which was absolutely extraordinary. The well-marked trail is full of enchantment with plank walkways and bridges that cross swampy bogs and summer streams. But the thrills don’t come easy. The path is rocky, uneven and frequently steep. But giddying views of mystical streams, sculpted mountains and deep and silent lakes make it all worth the extreme fatigue that follows the next day. There’s a definite ‘Lost World’ feel to this hike full of character. The reward at the end of this four-hour trek is a Bhutanese picnic lunch in an apple orchard.

Food & accommodation

Scrumptious Bhutanese delicacies are a major highlight of the trail. Expect lots of ema datsi(which literally means chilli and cheese) with every meal and steamed and fried momos with Bhutanese chilli sauce ezay. Rice is omnipresent as also puta or buckwheat noodles. Puffed red rice called zaow dunked in savoury butter tea
is a national pastime. Stay options along the trail include campsites, heritage farmhouses, rural homestays and comfortable four-star hotels. No matter which part of the trail you choose to explore, you’re in for head-spinning views and tranquillity. Even the drive in between the treks is littered with rainbows! So dust off those hiking boots and hit the trail.

Bhutan fact file

Bhutan has only one airport, located in Paro. Two airlines Bhutan Airlines and Druk Air fly to Bhutan from Kolkata, Delhi and Mumbai in India.

Indians visiting Bhutan will have to pay a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of Rs 1200 (US$15) per person per day. A pre-arranged guide, hotel accommodation and permits are essential. This can be arranged through a Bhutanese agent or independently.

The best months to visit Bhutan are March/April — for warm temperatures and stunning rhododendron blooms — and October/November — for clear Himalayan views and the most popular festivals.

There are various itineraries and packages to get a taste of the trail which starts from a week to a month to explore the entire length of the trail (403 km). Prices depend on the length of stay and accommodation chosen.

Why are millions of Indian women dropping out of work?

The numbers are stark – for the first time in India’s recent history, not only was there a decline in the female labour participation rate, but also a shrinking of the total number of women in the workforce.

  • Nearly 20 million Indian women quit work between 2004-05 to 2011-12
  • The labour force participation rate for women of working age declined from 42% in 1993-94 to 31% in 2011-12
  • Some 53% of the total drop – the largest chunk – happened among women aged 15-24 and living in villages
  • In rural areas, the female labour force participation rate dropped from 49% to 37.8% between 2004-05 and 2009-10
  • While more than 24 million men joined the work force between 2004-5 to 2009-10, the number of women in the the work force dropped by 21.7 million

Using data gleaned from successive rounds of National Sample Survey Organisation and census data, a team of researchers from World Bank have attempted to find out why this is happening.

“These are significant matters of concern. As India poises itself to increase economic growth and foster development, it is necessary to ensure that its labour force becomes fully inclusive of women,” says the study, authored by Luis A Andres, Basab Dasgupta, George Joseph, Vinoj Abraham and Maria Correia.

So what accounts for the unprecedented and puzzling drop in women’s participation in the workforce – at a time when India’s economy has grown at a steady pace?

Predictable social norms are attributed to women quitting work in India: marriage, motherhood, vexed gender relations and biases, and patriarchy.

But they may not be the only reasons. Marriage, for example, does affect the rate of participation of women in the workforce. But in villages, the workforce participation rate of married women has been found to be higher than that of unmarried women – whereas in the cities, the situation is reversed.

Significantly, rising aspirations and relative prosperity may be actually responsible for putting a large cohort of women out of work in India.

Remember, the largest drop has been in the villages.

After calculating the labour force participation rates and educational participation rates (young women in schools) the researchers believe that one plausible explanation for the drop in the participation rate among rural girls and women aged 15-24 is the recent expansion of secondary education and rapidly changing social norms leading to “more working age young females opting to continue their education rather than join the labour force early”.

The study says there has been a “larger response to income changes among the poor, rather than the wealthy, by sending children to school”.

Also, casual workers – mainly women – drop out of the workforce when wages increased for regular earners – mainly men – leading to the stabilisation of family incomes.

Whether it is in the corporate sector, entrepreneurship or political leadership, women are lagging behind men. (Source: Getty Images)

“Improved stability in family income can be understood as a disincentive for female household members to join the labour force,” says the study.

This largely resonates with the existing literature, which suggests that with rising household income levels, women in rural India withdraw from paid labour and engage in status production at home.”

But dropping or opting out of the workforce to go to school and get an education may not ensure that these women will eventually go to work.

After studying the relationship with the female labour participation rate and levels of educational achievements, the researchers found that having a high school-level education was “not found to be an incentive for women” to work.

The lowest rate of participation is among those who had secured school and high school education in the cities and villages. And the rate is actually highest among illiterates and college graduates.

But there has been a general drop in the rate in recent years, indicating that irrespective of educational attainments, “the incentive for women to participate in the workforce has declined over this period”.

IPS officer’s untimely transfer raise eyebrows

Nisha James

The government on Wednesday transferred Nisha James, deputy commissioner of police (administration), Bengaluru, and posted her as Superintendent of Police, internal security division (ISD).

Many IPS officers and the police rank and file said her sudden transfer was the result of a pseudonymous complaint against her.

In Nisha’s place, the government has posted B M Laxmi Prasad, a 2014-batch IPS officer.

A senior police officer said the timing of her transfer was “demoralising.”

A few people posted in the police commissioner’s office, including officer superintendents (OS), first division assistants (FDAs) and second division assistants (SDAs), circulated a complaint written to M A Saleem, additional director general of police (administration), against James.

The complaint alleged harassment of staff and levelled wild allegations against her.

Saleem had told DH that no such complaint had been received at his office. James treated it as pseudonymous.

The transfer order was immediately followed by a movement order, directing James to get relieved of her DCP (administration) duties and take charge of her new role.

The same was directed to Prasad in the order. James didn’t leave her office until late Thursday evening.

During her tenure as DCP (administration), James ensured corruption-free postings of assistant sub-inspectors, head constables and police constables based on seniority.

The officers were allowed to choose the police station or section where they wished to work. This was against the earlier practice where transfers were ‘dictated by bribes and references’.

James ensured that low-ranking officers posted at a particular police station or the Central Crime Branch (CCB) for years were transferred.

The transparent postings left the clerical staff ‘with no extra income’. James was so scrupulous that she did not entertain the recommendations sent by the chief minister, the home minister and her own bosses.

James also did not renew the arms licences of citizens who had obtained them without valid reasons.

Many influential citizens had managed to get arms licences without any perceptible threat or necessity by taking help from senior police officers, including commissioners. Many of these people had complained to politicians against James.

The IPS officer also ensured transparency in all sections under her administration.

Whenever irregularities were found, she issued memos and withheld increments. Thus, she reportedly became a target for most of the clerical staff and policemen with vested interests. They all ganged up and complained against her.

When the government did not take action, they sent a copy of the complaint to mediapersons and ensured coverage.

Speaking to DH, many constables who received postings during James’s tenure said they did not have to pay anything.

Some officers, however, justified the IPS officer’s transfer, saying she had worked for almost three years in that position.

Mika comes under fire for dancing with 12-year-old Riva Arora, netizens burst in anger

Fame is fickle – it is momentary and wanes as quickly as it rises. In such a scenario, youngsters today are in a mad rush to prove themselves, often leading to choices inappropriate for their age, especially in an industry like Bollywood. The latest to fall trap into the shining world of glamour seems to be 12-year-old Riva Arora, seen recently in a dance video with 45-year-old Mika Singh.

Riva is a child actor, best remembered for crying in a funeral scene in the movie URI in 2019 and playing a young Gunjan in Gunjan Saxena in 2020. Post that, Riva seemed to have worked hard and groomed herself for Bollywood as it is evident from her IG handle. However, she was recently seen in a dance video with Mika Singh that did not go down well with the masses. Netizens slammed the singer for romantically dancing with a girl young enough to be his daughter. Riva’s parents also came under the fire for encouraging Riva to take up such a project and the internet was seen seething in anger.

Comments like “Is she 12 for sure??? Unbelievable that this is even happening” and “She’s going to come out in a few years saying she was groomed by her parents and the industry. Poor girl😔 What the hell are her parents doing?!” also surfaced on the internet.

This is not the first time Riva has been in the news for an age inappropriate video – she was also recently seen in a reel with Karan Kundrra, who is 26 years older to her. Netizens also found a video of hers from when she was 11 that saw her abused and chained to a bed.

Vikram Vedha Box Office Review : Expectations

There’s a negative wave against the remakes made in Bollywood. In the recent past, films like Bachchhan Paandey, Jersey and Laal Singh Chaddha tanked at the box office. There are several reasons behind their failure but being a remake definitely worked negatively for all these films. Vikram Vedha too had the same fear surrounding it, but the film sustained well through the hurdle and managed to grab attention through the trailer.

Thanks to the well cut and highly engaging trailer, VV created an air of excitement around it. However, the film didn’t get a deserved momentum due to low key promotions, which took the film in a zone where a thing like bumper opening was missing. However, it looked a like a film which we call “lambi race ka ghoda” at the box office.

He also confirmed that the owner Pulkit Arya`s brother Ankit Arya came at 8 AM on September 18 and talked about preparing dinner for four people and said that he would have dinner in Ankita`s room. Hyderabad Metro Rail’s car-free appeal riles commuters

Current affairs

While the HMRL encouraged commuters to use the Metro Rail on Sept 22 in order to give their cars a day’s break, outraged Metro Rail users asked that the HMRL increase coaches.

HYDERABAD: The World Car Free Day is observed annually on September 22 and promotes car-free days in cities all around the world. This year, the Hyderabad Metro Rail also jumped on board, promoting the use of metro trains as an alternative to driving cars around, entirely oblivious to the reality that most metro trains run at capacity and are constantly crowded with people squabbling for space.

The Hyderabad Metro Rail tweeted, “Hiya Hyderabad, Let’s give your automobiles a day’s relaxation on the event of World Automotive Free Day” and shared a picture inviting the town commuters to make use of the metro, which sparked backlash from the commuters.

Whereas the Hyderabad Metro Rail Restricted (HMRL) inspired commuters to make use of the Metro Rail on September 22 so as to give their automobiles a day’s break, outraged Metro Rail customers requested that the HMRL improve coaches, no less than throughout peak hours, as the vast majority of metro trains are already full of passengers.

Sharada, a daily Metro Rail consumer who works for an MNC in Raidurgam, said, “All of the coaches, together with two to 3 coaches allotted for ladies, are already working at most occupancy throughout peak hours. If the Metro Rail authorities are asking us to take the metro on particular dates equivalent to ‘World Automotive Free Day’, they need to achieve this solely after growing the variety of coaches.”

Private Engineering colleges fee slashed in Telangana

Published by Theaglenews

Hyderabad: In a major decision that could bring in relief for students and parents, the Telangana Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee (TAFRC) slashed the fee for several private engineering colleges in the State by revising its earlier fee structure that was fixed in July.

This year, the TAFRC has fixed a fee of Rs.1.60 lakh per annum for the MGIT, which is highest among all private engineering colleges. This college has retained its fee structure as fixed in July. Similarly, the CBIT which earlier got the highest fee structure i.e., Rs.1.73 lakh per annum has now got a fee of Rs.1.12 lakh per annum.

On the other hand, the minimum fee has gone up from Rs.35,000 per annum in 2019 to Rs.45,000 per annum now. Around 12 engineering colleges received fees over Rs.1 lakh per annum and majority colleges have a fee more than the minimum fee. This new fee structure will be applicable for the next three-year block period starting academic year 2022-23.

As fee revision was due for the next three-year block period this year, the TAFRC had invited applications from private colleges. A fee of Rs.1.73 lakh per annum for the CBIT was fixed in July this year. Likewise, close to 30 colleges got their revised over Rs.1 lakh per annum.

However, this revised fee was not notified and the Committee had decided to retain the existing fee for the present academic year given the hardships faced by students and parents due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

As the Committee decided on retaining the earlier fee structure, 79 private engineering colleges approached theHigh Court which passed an interim order allowing them to collect the enhanced fee. However, it asked the colleges to refund the differential amount if the fee notified by the TAFRC was less than the amount collected from students.

With some colleges approaching the Committee seeking a review on the fee fixed, the TAFRC, while reviewing audit reports submitted by managements, has found several discrepancies. Following which the Committee had called around 90 colleges for personal hearings in which the fee for several colleges was reduced compared to the fee fixed in July, while for some earlier fee was retained.

“The new fee structure will be placed before the TAFRC committee meeting which is scheduled for Saturday and later it will be sent to the State government for issuance of order,” an official said.

Bhutan opens for tourists after 2 years, know how much you have to pay on visit

Brought in by ThEagle

Bhutan has re-opened its borders for international tourists after over two and half years following the COVID-19 pandemic. The reopening has come with a revised tourism levy called the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF).

The tiny Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan Friday finally opened its borders to international tourists, including those from India, after being closed for two and a half years due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Bhutan’s Ambassador to India, Major General Vetsop Namgyel said fully-vaccinated travellers are now welcome and tourists would no longer be required to be quarantined upon arrival.
Namgyel said the strict measures adopted by the Bhutanese government during the pandemic helped the country save lives.
We took two and a half years to open our international borders, as our priority during the pandemic was to prevent the loss of lives. So we took very stringent measures. This was very effective as Bhutan hardly had any fatalities from Covid-19,” the Bhutanese Ambassador stated.

As of today, there will be no more quarantine for people coming to Bhutan. There will be no test on arrival. Only vaccine certificate needs to be shown,” he added.
The envoy said there will be a daily fee for tourists to enter Bhutan. Namgyel said the Bhutanese government’s tourism council has fixed a fee of Rs 1,200 per day for Indians. For other international tourists, the fee is USD 200 per day.
“The tourism council did a review of policies to find out if we have to keep Bhutan as a high or low volume tourist destination. For Indian tourists, Rs 1,200 per day will be charged by the Bhutanese government as Sustainable Development Fee (SDF),” the ambassador said.

Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest serving monarch, has died. Prince Charles becomes King at the age of 73

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years.

Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday.

The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.

With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms.

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon.

“The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

All the Queen’s children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.

Her grandson, Prince William, is also there, with his brother, Prince Harry, on his way.

Queen Elizabeth II’s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the UK’s entry into – and withdrawal from – the European Union.

Her reign spanned 15 prime ministers starting with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed by the Queen earlier this week.

She held weekly audiences with her prime minister throughout her reign.

At Buckingham Palace in London, crowds awaiting updates on the Queen’s condition began crying as they heard of her death. The Union flag on top of the palace was lowered to half-mast at 18:30 BST.

The Queen was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary Windsor, in Mayfair, London, on 21 April 1926.

Few could have foreseen she would become monarch but in December 1936 her uncle, Edward VIII, abdicated from the throne to marry the twice-divorced American, Wallis Simpson.

Elizabeth’s father became King George VI and, at age 10, Lilibet, as she was known in the family, became heir to the throne.

Within three years, Britain was at war with Nazi Germany. Elizabeth and her younger sister, Princess Margaret, spent much of wartime at Windsor Castle after their parents rejected suggestions they be evacuated to Canada.

After turning 18, Elizabeth spent five months with the Auxiliary Territorial Service and learned basic motor mechanic and driving skills. “I began to understand the esprit de corps that flourishes in the face of adversity,” she recalled later.

Through the war, she exchanged letters with her third cousin, Philip, Prince of Greece, who was serving in the Royal Navy. Their romance blossomed and the couple married at Westminster Abbey on 20 November 1947, with the prince taking the title of Duke of Edinburgh.

She would later describe him as “my strength and stay” through 74 years of marriage, before his death in 2021, aged 99.

World’s highest railway bridge on Chenab river to get GOLDEN JOINT, know all about it By Theaglenews

The devotees alleged that due to inadequate arrangements made by the Executive Officer (EO) of the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanam (TTD), which oversees affairs at the temple, devotees are forced to wait in the queue for hours without food and water. Devotees also expressed their outrage over alleged preferential treatment provided to VIPs, and temple staff peoples who skipped the queue for the darshan.

A devotee who visited the temple said, “They gave 2 pm slot for darshan but  finally got chance at 8.30 pm. There is no food or water during the peak time. Devotees went through a lot of trouble. If devotees ask questions to authorities, police behave like rowdies and were seen pushing them back. Should devotees be scared of them?”

Picture past

A woman devotee said, “We were forced to stand in line for so long with our kids and VIPs and staff recommended people kept going. They packed us all together even though we also paid for the darshan as well. Won’t COVID-19 spread now? Policemen are also constantly roughing us up. Those VIPs with a lot of money are taking groups of people with them in front of our eyes because they have money. Do you think no one will ask? TTD EO did not make proper arrangements. He should resign. We came in the morning and we’re still here in the evening. Who should we tell our troubles to?”

Here in the temple town of Tirupati, the news is all about the appointment, by the Andhra Pradesh government, of a ‘jumbo’ Board of 81 members for the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Board. With irregularities, poor Management the world richest temple is slowing loosing its name.

HYDERABAD:Musi River in spate-by Zeusnewsos

With nearly 20,000 cusecs of flood water being released from the twin reservoirs of Osman Sagar and Himayath Sagar, Hyderabad’s Musi river continues to flow beyond danger levels. Several low-lying areas along its banks, especially at Chaderghat, Kamalanagar, Shankarnagar and Moosanagar, are inundated. As of 11 am Wednesday, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has opened 21 of the total 32 gates in these two reservoirs.

Florence Griffith still considered fastest women

Flo-Jo, the woman that even the fastest living woman Shericka Jackson couldn’t beat

Written by theeaglenews Florence Griffith Joyner is still the fastest woman on earth. (Screengrab)

Before Shericka Jackson, there was Florence Griffith Joyner, still the fastest woman on earth. A bank teller, a fashionista, a supreme athlete, the fastest there ever was. She died young at 38, in her sleep after an epileptic seizure but left an incredible inspiring tale for future stars like Serena Williams.

“The fastest living woman!” The commentator would boom just as Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson blurred along the track, arms pumping, knees kicking, to an incredible time of 21:45 to take gold at the World Athletic Championship. She still would be the second-fastest woman in history. The fastest was the great Florence Griffith Joyner, aka Flo Jo, who lived a fast dreamy life as a runner, a free spirit, an ebullient fashionista who the famous singer Beyonce would nod her respects to, once wearing a ‘flo-jo’ costume, and who died tragically young, in her sleep after an epileptic attack, a death that she had premonitions about for a while. They say it’s better to die young than fade away and Flo Jo unfortunately became its most famous symbolic figure. But boy could she run. Her life is quite a story.

Black fungus: These 5 states account for over 65% of India’s 11,717 mucormycosis casesfungus:

The country has recorded 11,717 cases of “Black Fungus” or Mucormycosis so far with Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Telangana logging the highest number of rare fungal infection, according to the latest government data.

Telangana declared Mucormycosis as a notifiable disease

Telangana has declared black fungus or mucormycosis as an epidemic after the state witnessed a rise in such cases. The decision comes at a time when cases of fungal infection are rising among recovered Covid-19 patients in many states. The black fungus or Mucormycosis is a side-effect of the Covid virus, being reported in a number of patients. Two hospitals in the state of Telangana reported around 60 cases in a single day. Doctors are raising alarms to maintain proper hygiene in hospitals, as the fungus arises on wet surfaces. ENT surgeons are the first point of contact for the patient as there is pain and bleeding from the nose. Sinusitis is the first indication in Covid-19 recovered patients that there is an invasive fungal infection stemming in their body. The beds in Government ENT Hospital at Kothi are fast getting filled by Mucormycosis patients. 160 out of the 200 beds in the hospital were occupied by patients suffering from the fungal infection also known as Black Fungus.    Dr T Shankar  government hospital’s superintendent  said If the 200 beds are filled up they will make use of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) building on their premises and set up 40 more beds.

Dr Shankar said that 10 out of the 160 patients got admitted after undergoing surgeries at private hospitals. Availability of Liposomal Amphotericin B at the government hospital is one of the reasons why patients got discharged from private hospitals, and opted admission at the ENT Hospital.

Can you get Covid-19 even after vaccination?

As India reels under the second wave of Covid-19, there have been reports of reinfection. Some people who have been vaccinated against Covid were diagnosed with the disease again.

Can you get Covid-19 even after vaccination?

The Press Information Bureau (PIB) of the Government of India took to Twitter to clear the air about this question. According to the government, yes, people can get infected with Covid-19 even after they are vaccinated. However, a very small percentage of people are contracting coronavirus after getting vaccinated. Even after they test positive, they experience mild symptoms, the government said.

Bharat Biotech Nasal vaccine could be game changer to Fight against Corona Virus

A nasal spray vaccine can be a gamechanger in the fight against Covid-19. Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech has started the clinical trial of the intranasal vaccine.

Scientists say that the vaccine stimulates an immune response in just 14 days. It will minimise the virus load in the local area from where the virus enters the body. Several studies have suggested that the virus first becomes firmly established in the nasal cavity and then it is spread to the other parts body, affecting the lungs most.

The current vaccines are being administered using a syringe and a country like India would require at least 260 crore syringes to inoculate the entire population. Bharat Biotech had in September last year signed an agreement with the Washington University School of Medicine to work on an intranasal vaccine. The pre-clinical trial of the vaccine candidate, BBV154 has already started. If all goes as expected, the clinical trial would be completed by June and it could become available in the market by August.

HYDERABAD: Telangana has recorded its highest count of Covid-19 cases in a single day on Sunday with 3,187 new cases being reported in the state, breaking the previous record during the first wave. Mylab Discovers first testing kit for #Corona Virus#

India has been criticised for its poor record of testing people in the battle against coronavirus. That, however, is set to change, thanks in large part to the efforts of one virologist, who delivered on a working test kit, just hours before delivering her baby .

On Thursday, the first made-in-India coronavirus testing kits reached the market, raising hopes of an increase in screening of patients with flu symptoms to confirm or rule out the Covid-19 infection.

Mylab Discovery, in the western city of Pune, became the first Indian firm to get full approval to make and sell testing kits. It shipped the first batch of 150 to diagnostic labs in Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Goa and Bengaluru (Bangalore) this week.

“Our manufacturing unit… is working through the weekend and the next batch will be sent out on Monday,” Dr Gautam Wankhede, Mylab’s director for medical affairs, told the BBC on Friday.

The molecular diagnostic company, which also makes testing kits for HIV and Hepatitis B and C, and other diseases, says it can supply up to 100,000 Covid-19 testing kits a week and can produce up to 200,000 if needed.

Each Mylab kit can test 100 samples and costs 1,200 rupees ($16; £13) – that’s about a quarter of the 4,500 rupees that India pays to import Covid-19 testing kits from abroad.

Virologist delivered kit, then her baby
“Our kit gives the diagnosis in two and a half hours while the imported testing kits take six-seven hours,” says virologist Minal Dakhave Bhosale, Mylab’s research and development chief.

Ms Bhosale, who headed the team that designed the coronavirus testing kit called Patho Detect, said it was done “in record time” – six weeks instead of three or four months.

And the scientist was battling with her own deadline too. Last week she gave birth to a baby girl – and only began work on the programme in February, just days after leaving hospital with a pregnancy complication.

“It was an emergency, so I took this on as a challenge. I have to serve my nation,” she says, adding that her team of 10 worked “very hard” to make the project a success.

In the end, she submitted the kit for evaluation by the National Institute of Virology (NIV) on 18 March, just a day before delivering her daughter.

Image captionMinal Dakhave Bhosale says Mylab’s testing kit was developed ‘in record time’
That same evening, just an hour before she was taken to hospital ahead of her Caesarean, she submitted the proposal to the Indian FDA and the drugs control authority CDSCO for commercial approval.

“We were running against time,” says Dr Wankhede. “Our reputation was at stake, we had to get everything right on the first go, and Minal was leading our efforts from the front.”

Before submitting the kits for evaluation, the team had to check and re-check all the parameters to ensure its results that were precise, and accurate.

“If you carry out 10 tests on the same sample, all 10 results should be same,” said Ms Bhosale. “And we achieved that. Our kit was perfect.”

Why is India testing so little?
The government-run Indian Council for Medical Research (ICMR), under which NIV operates, agreed. It said Mylab was the only Indian company to achieve 100% results.

‘Gaping holes in Indian health system’
India has been criticised for not testing enough. It has one of the lowest rates in the world, with just 6.8 tests per million.

Initially, India insisted on testing only those who had travelled to high-risk countries or had come in contact with an infected person or health workers treating coronavirus patients. It later said that anyone admitted to hospital with severe respiratory distress should also be tested.

But with the circle of infection widening daily, the numbers are expected to grow hugely.

Image copyrightGETTY IMAGESIndians airlifted from Wuhan at a quarantine facility in India
Image captionIndia has tightly controlled the number of people who could be tested for the coronavirus
In the past few days, India has scaled up testing. Initially, only the state labs were allowed to test for coronavirus, but permission has now been extended to several private labs too.

And on Thursday, India also gave approvals to 15 private companies to commercially sell diagnostic kits based on licences they have obtained in the US, European Union and some other countries.

Dr Wankhede says with the number of suppliers and labs increasing every day, the testing will go up exponentially.

Increased testing would be a huge help, but experts say India has gaping holes in its health infrastructure that need to be plugged urgently to deal with the growing threat of coronavirus.

“South Korea – that’s so tiny – has 650 labs testing for the coronavirus, how many do we have?” asks Sujatha Rao, former federal health secretary.
